I'm sorry to hear. As they say, easy comes easy goes. I graduated in 2011 and Biglaw wouldn't even look at me despite being above median at T10 law school, so you should appreciate you had a few years inside their machine. I think you're very smart and talented and will do fine in the long term.

I left Big Law two years ago, and honestly that decision was one of the best I've ever made. I started my own firm with one other partner. We do business law and managed to get plenty of great clients. Having my own business is awesome, I get to travel, started investing heavily in real estate, and control my own hours!

Big Law would be great if you could do it 40 hours a week. But it doesn't really work that way. And I think that is part of the problem. It's designed to maximize profit, not to optimize personal happiness and to create work-life balance.

Just saw this very late. I'm glad your firm is doing well. I am an alumnus of the same firm, albeit many years before. I first moved to a boutique Chicago firm to do bigger better deals, and then went solo 19 years ago after getting married and moving downstate. Best move ever. Best wishes!

We were hearing rumblings within Seyfarth (Atlanta office) that layoffs were acomin' back in late 2022, early 2023. I'm sorry you were impacted.

This is the proper way to handle and think about a major life-altering thing. Keep at it 👍

I could never stand Big Law. I even tried Medium Law and Small Law and they were just as difficult. With Small Law it's easier to find nicer people to work with, but it's still insanely busy. I guess my problem is that I really want to find the mythical Slow and Reasonable Law (from the 1940's and 1950s') But it doesn't exist anymore so you would have to be a rich powerful and successful partner in order to even try and create Slow and Reasonable law. And there isn't much money in it.

Looking back, would you recommend going to a law school that gives a good scholarship (full ride?) or a more prestigious school that costs significantly more?

Do you think a big reason why you got laid off is because you were in the real estate group? Like if someone was in a more stable group would they be a lot less likely to get laid off?

I'm about to be a summer associate in a big law firm on their RE team. Is this something I should be concerned about?

As someone outside of the industry, the math doesn’t line up. If your billing approx 1700-2000 hours/year at what I would assume is $500/hr, after an approx 300k salary, wouldn’t an associate net the firm roughly 500k? In your opinion is this driven by the partners envisioning a reduction in cases / transactions?
