I’ve listened to this solo probably 10, 000 times and it will still never get old nor will it ever lose its impact. Just phenomenal.

Its not just the fact Eddie had the chops to do it, what is really mind blowing is he came up with it

Recorded Sept. 8th, 1977. Think about that. Think about where guitar playing was before this and what came in his wake. EVH completely revolusionised the way people approached playing the guitar. Pure genius.

The sound from the overheads makes it even more real and live sounding

That solo rocked the world. Literally.

I was the first person in Flagstaff, AZ to own Van Halen's self titled first album. I bought it as a recommendation from a high school buddy who heard some of it while visiting family in SoCal. He could only remember parts of the name, which of course made it difficult at the "Circles, Records, And Tapes" music store. After weeks reviewing music magazines with the store owner, it finally appeared. Not being 100% sure of the name, it was a gamble for me to order it. The store owner was as excited as I was for seeing something close, so he said he'd order one if I did. When it arrived, he called me!!! I left work (it was Saturday) to go to the store. He opened one to play in the store, and said that if I didn't like it, I didn't have to buy it! What a great dude he was! Well, he played it, start to finish, and we just stood there with our mouths agape, nearly in tears of joy, and played the whole album again! In between playings I bought the album.
We spent the afternoon trying to figure out if "Eruption" had some organ used in it. IT WAS A TRULY MIND BLOWING DAY IN MY LIFE!!! One I'll never forget, as you can tell, if you're still reading! If so, thank you for your time.

Didnt just play the music, he wrote it, on a guitar he built, and invented a genre/style of playing back when this was unheard of, truly one of a kind ♥️

Keep in mind that was played 45 years ago... EVH was a pioneer and absolute legend. RIP

Still hits me the same way it did in 1978, just astonishing.
All of us who were players knew that "there's a new Sheriff in town" when it hit.
Rest in peace Edward

The thing is - is this was 1978. It’s like watching Star Wars today - it’s great, but watching (or hearing) something like this back then was absolutely crazy.

Two of the world’s best guitarists listening to one of the best guitarists to ever live. What an awesome clip

Don’t care how many times I hear it, I still get chills…. RIP Eddie

It's not a competition. We can all simply appreciate each artist for who they are and just be content with that.

You know someone was special when you're still in awe and continue to be amazed by someone long after they're gone. Eddie redefined what it was to be one of a kind. This recording just hits you different. Its so raw.

Here’s what impressed me: you KNOW these 2 virtuosos had to have listened to and played this hundreds of times; and yet their facial expressions still evoke a childlike wonder and amazement, as if hearing it for the first time. Much respect.
