More fun in the terminal with Wezterm!

Wezterm is a my new favorite terminal emulator. It's been fun to create some customizations for it using the lua programming language. In this video, I'll show you how I swap out background images, fonts, and color schemes using lua. I'll also show you a tip for how to get rid of the notch if you have a MacBook.

Check out the blog post with more details:

The fact that i can customize both my editor and terminal in lua is really great!

Interesting video, but switching just for backgrounds and theming are kind of shallow reasons... what about performance, scrollback search, window splits, tabs?, tmux integration, bitmap fonts?, integration with zsh/fish, etc?

I've also moved from iTerm to Wezterm recently, much smoother experience imo

Thanks! So cool you make blog posts along with YouTube videos.

This is probably the worst approach to explain software. Talking about shallow topics such as background and colors while wezterm has a multiplexer supporting local, unix socket, ssh domains, TLS and more, when it has panes, windows, workspaces, input prompts and pickers, etc. It feels like you completely missed the point of the terminal to me.

Great video Josh! I'll have to give it a try, especially since I can use Lua for config!

Cool. I’ll have to try that out. I switched from iTerm to Kitty originally because I experienced performance issues in iTerm. And I needed a replacement that supported ligatures and was cross platform. I’ve been happy with kitty, but the lua config of wezterm looks interesting

on Linux in hyprland you can set xray option which will render all transparent regions as if there was nothing behind them, only wallpapers

Also I like to yoink the idea from windows wallpapers auto rotation. I would like to make it automatically rotate the wallpapers on given intervals

The LUA part must be such a huge overhead.
I'm still looking for a terminal that just starts in the blink of an eye, uses as little RAM and CPU as possible and just shows me plain text.
But I feel like they all, somehow, mess that up with either having a huge overhead (LUA), or generally just being big and clunky with lots of shortcuts that I have to remove as to not interfere with my actual Vim config (Kitty).
And the second I find something I like, it's not cross-platform, and since I jump between a lot of OS's that's something I can't accept.

I got wezterm configuration from your github page. I am keep getting module 'utils/background' not found: whenever I start wezterm. do you know what could be the issue. ?

I wonder why the landing page still only says it runs on win10 and doesn't mention win11

Im using linux. wezterm is my opengl terminal of choice (alacrity and kitty being alternatives) because it offers scrolling side bar. I still like to use mouse.

I tried WezTerm but its font rendering quality is not what I expected.
