How to break in a brand new Suzuki Outboard Motor

Here is the perfect instruction on how to break in a brand new Suzuki Outboard motor. The process is fairly simple but very important, to say the least. following these simple steps help seat the piston and make sure the motor adapts accordingly. Not following these instructions could lead to piston or motor failure and could void your warranty. Here are the steps in perfect sequence:

Step 1: Idle the engine in gear for 15 minutes or longer, keep the RPMs low.

Step 2: Run the boat for one hour and forty-five minutes at 3000 RPMs. Do not exceed 3000.

Step 3: Run the boat at 4000 RPMs for one hour. Do not exceed the 4000 RPMs.

Step 4: Operate the boat normally but do not run at full RPMs for longer than five minutes. It's best to fluctuate the RPMs and do this for the next seven hours.

That is all there is to properly break in your new Suzuki. I must admit, I have been very satisfied with my purchase thus far and look forward to years of reliability.

Just finished the first 3 hours of break-in on my new twin 250's now for the remaining 7 :)

Kudos to Chris for taking 5 hours out of his day for breaking in that engine, most outboard shops would have you do it on your own time. Also I would look into that spray coming off the powerpole spraying onto the motor.

Watched this video when it first dropped, Bought my 2005 24' CC Sea Pro Bay Boat in need of a re power earlier this summer and just this week, Took it to Chris @ On Site in Ruskin, he seems awesome, straight forward, knowledgeable and fair. Boat is there now for a new White 250 and a Bobs Action jack plate combo, probably be done next week and I get to do the break-in between Christmas and New Years. Living in Bradenton Ruskin was a short drive and worth it !! Enjoy your videos and good be able to patronize someone you deal with locally.

Do i need to change oil after the first 20 hours? And how do i know i’ve reached 20 hours if i have the regular rpm gauge and not the digital one? Will the oil light turn on?

Thanks!

This winter at the MN boat show, I decided to re-power my boat with a 140HP Suzuki. Traded in my 150HP Johnson 2 stroke. I have not had it on the water yet (next week hopefully 10 Apr 24) Have to do the break-in. Can't wait to get it wet!

Thanks for creating this video.
If someone doesn't have enough time to do the run-in after 3000rpm, say, and then comes back another day to do the 4000rpm, should they go through the 15min idle also?
How long is it recommended to warm up an engine (eg 140hp) before driving off, normally?
Thanks again

So the last 7 hours you can run to your favourite fishing spots and stop and fish for the rest of the break-in?

what oil did you use for the break in? Book says ecstar 10w30/10w40 or equivalent. Been doing a little poking around and 90% of marinas, suzuki outboard mechanics..ect say to use 100% conventional for break in.

Hey Josh
I have a new Suzuki 140 my question is do I have to run at those rpms the whole time or just not to exceed those rpms? Just wondering if hit no wakes can I go from 3000 to idle for a while then back to 3000?

Will the breakin still work by following the manuel instructions?

I have a small 20 HP Suzuki. Do you recommend the same warm up time? Also is this break in all during the same day or can I separate it out?
