Before he was directing films in the DC Extended Universe, Zack Snyder brought us Sucker Punch, an intense and psychological film that didn’t go over well with a lot of critics. Audiences mostly agreed, as many viewers simply found the ending confusing, but since a lot of people have been revisiting Snyder’s pre-DC work in recent years, we’re going to break down the ending of the film.

It’s a film that leaves a lot up to the viewer, with all kinds of hints about which events are actually happening, so let’s take a look at the explanation of the ending of Sucker Punch.

Baby Doll is the one that the story is about. Sweet Pea is who she wishes she could be. Each female character is a part of her brain that she holds dear. They all die at the end as the hammer hits the needle as each part of her brain is being lobotomized. At the end when Sweet Pea gets on the bus, that is the final hit of the hammer and Baby Doll is fully lobotomized but in her head has freed herself and will live out the rest of "paradise" in her own world trapped inside her head.

uploads a video that says ending is explained, later on says that we decide what we think.

Still got no answer, only theories

When lobotomy is executed, you can't experience something new, you are trapped in you mind and your last memories. That's what she creates during the movie, a new world inside her mind she will have to stay in. After lobotomy her new imaginary world is everything she got

This film is so underrated. Amazing performance by Emily Browning, sickening visuals and soundtrack!

“You didn’t explain the ending. You just gave theories.” You guys simply don’t understand the the theories IS the ending being explained. Zack Snyder created such an incredible story that can literally have different endings depending on how YOU watched it and how you felt. That’s one of many reasons why I love this film so much. I wish more films would give us a chance to have our own endings.

This was a great movie that weak minded people labeled a bad film. Story was deep, characters were great and the ending was a good twist.

I just need a straight answer at this point

Sad so many people didn't understand the movie. Most of us usually escape our realities using fantasy to either makes us feel better or just because. This movie is very underrated.

I believe it’s Sweet Pea’s. At first, when Babydoll arrives to the asylum, Sweet Pea is acting out Babydoll and her back story, and if we go by the therapist’s methods, they act out their traumas. Babydoll is Sweet Pea’s traumatic self. At the end, when Babydoll gets the lobotomy and Sweet Pea escapes, it means that she is finally free in her mind and who she really is (Sweet Pea) and leaves her traumatic self behind.

I think the beginning (at the stage) is the biggest hint of them all and it’s the most compelling clue we have because this fact didn’t come from Sweet Pea or Babydoll, but from the psychologist instead

So...I guess Baby doll was Sweet Pea's projected alternate personality, which are usually created through dissociation as a result of trauma. Maybe it's the other way around: Maybe it was Sweet Pea who was the alternate personality. That might explain the boy from the trenches in the WWII-era battle showing up on the bus that Sweet Pea steals away on. This was actually a very enlightening video. After watching it, I now think that the little boy in the trenches of war, that the girls encounter in the first quarter of the movie, may be a symbol or projection of Baby doll's/Sweet Pea's innocence or inner child. At the film's end, Sweet Pea sees him again on the bus that will take them both away from the war (real-life being trafficked to wealthy pedos and predators) to safety. A female who has experience sexual trauma may develop alternate personalities to handle the trauma, and may develop alters that are the opposite gender as it distances them from themselves and their core identity that much more.

Sucker Punch is a criminally underrated film. It will develop a cult following if it hasn't already. The storytelling, script, direction, special effects, score and soundtrack, the production--excellent. It is a quality movie. More than that, it is visually bold and beautiful, and intellectually stimulating. Plus fantastic action sequences.

Imo this movie was underrated.
It had a deeper meaning which needed more than one viewing.

Sucker Punch is a very deep movie. No one can say for sure what was actually happening, only what their interpretation was. This video is no different.

ah, the first film to make me shed tears as a grown man, knowing that the horrific treatment shown in the film actually happened to patients in real life (the lobotomies and the abuse) in institutions in the 70's, I learned this because I was a support worker for people who had been mistreated this way, people who could have lived relatively normal lives, the mind is a fragile thing

Who else loved the songs they used in this movie?

In my opinion the movie is about sweat pea. And baby doll being sweat pea's guardian angle come to rescue her, because if you'll remember the start of the movie they talk about everyone having a guardian angle. The whole movie is a fantasy vision that sweat pea is imagining

Ive always thought, when she dances, she's actually in real life being sexually assaulted by blue. Her world around her seems more like club than a hospital, and when things get to hard to manage, she steps out of reality for a bit till it's over.
