The smoke is not confirmation bias, as you can get it to exactly follow you through experimentation.

What it is, is that the fire pulls in O2 in a full 360° radius.
What happens when you sit near it is that you block the flow in that area.
This results in a lower pressure section of the fires in flow of O2.

Thus since the universe hates a vacuum the smoke moves in to equalize the pressure.
Since the smoke is hotter and thus higher energy then the air around it making it more quicker then the surrounding colder ambient air.

So the reason it follows you [without a strong enough cross wind] is because of pressure and thermal differentials.
As such you can somewhat control where the smoke fill flow.

It's also similar to how Chimneys work.
As they also use pressure and thermal differentials to cause an up draft.
