Survivorman host Les Stroud uses the power of Twitter to answer the internet's burning questions about outdoor survival. How do survivalists subsist on one bug a day? Host and producer of Survivorman, Les Stroud is credited with creating the genre known as Survival TV. He is an award winning producer-director of several series and an author and musician and he launches Surviving Disasters with Les Stroud (March 2021) on all PBS stations along with Les Stroud’s Wild Harvest and his new children's book: Wild Outside with Annick Press.

As a non-survivalist, I also spend most of my time grovelling for food

Les Stroud is such an OG... unlike other popular survivalist shows, it was just him with no camera crew... truly impressive and way more high stakes!

I met him in my hometown which he had real-estate in of temagami Ontario at a gas station. Didnt believe it was him so I walked up and asked, "excuse me, does anyone ever say you look just like les stroud" he responded with "oh all the time, I hear he's a good looking man". Such a down to earth person ;)

I wasn't initially interested in this topic but the accuracy with which he answers the actual questions instead of babbling about his own experiences disregarding the question like many people end up doing is absolutely beautiful.

Coincidentally, I have 24 bottles of wine in my car survival kit.

Right after Hurricane Katrina, you put out a special about urban survival techniques and as a city dweller, those tips have always stayed with me. Luckily I've never used them, but things like drinking water out of the toilet tank, never breaking glass with your hands, cutting and using seatbelts as tethers...they are so simple but every time I see a movie where people do them wrong I want to scream!
Also, my mom made an urban survival bag and we thought she was nuts but guess who had K N-95 masks in the house this March....

Last time I went backpacking, I brought a dollar store lighter with me. It rained. It wouldn't light.
I found an old bic lighter sitting under a rock by the firepit, discarded by a previous camper. It lit.
Hiking in the rain for 8 hours, only to not be able to build a fire when you get to the campsite is nobody's idea of a good time.
Don't cheap out on gear.

12:00 - Cattail is the gift that keeps on giving. Since they grow in water, you find cattails and you've got food, water, tinder, and fibrous bulk for cordage and/or shelter all in one. If there's a sheltered overhang nearby, you're basically in a 5-star survival resort.

"Eat 'em both."

That's when I knew he knows his stuff and I should pay attention.

One thing I've added to my hiking kit is a small bottle of isopropyl, it serves as a wound disinfectant, rust remover, and is also flamable which helps get fires going in the wet.

wish they included his thoughts on boredom. you really do need to keep busy. mental health in a survival situation is virtually as essential as physical health - arguably more-so.

and i love his attitude. super positive but not in a cheesey way. wholesome without a sugar OD.

I have so much respect for Les. So many people have let us down, been revealed to be disingenuous, but it’s really hard not to trust him. There’s no BS with him and you can tell

I had to carve my own spoon. Went hiking, brought everything I needed. Knife, water, food, cooking stove, small survival kit (self made). I was five miles in before I realized I forgot a spoon.

I was in prison for 11 years. Watching Les Stroud on tv helped me escape my reality and go somewhere else for a little bit. Love this guy.

For anyone who is driving in winter, even in the city, or out of city limits, dress like you're going to walk. My dad's best advice. Even if it's just a coat with gloves and hat tucked in the sleeve, thrown into your trunk or backseat, and you think you wont need it. It never hurts to have and you'll thank yourself for having it when your car breaks down and you arent totally freezing and bound to your car-coffin.

Dress like you're going to walk.

Someone asked this man who eats rotting meat and maggots if he disinfects his hands before handling meat in the wilderness

To be honest it annoys me how much and how many people underestimate cars in a survival situation.I have seen some survival movies where their car breaks down and they just leave it.
Looking at the thing itself, it’s a shelter you don’t have to build and I think a pretty good one because they often have cushions, good for sleeping, it’s also fairly strong and have usually some indirect insulation. Also you drive on the road, meaning you will have it beside the road, obviously people pass by the road and could help. Also you can just fit lots of stuff inside.

re: car survival kit, keep in mind that cars can get super hot in the summer! Beware of any items that will melt or fall apart in extreme heat.
