Look Up! A Comet is Here

A comet not seen in 50,000 years will make its closest approach to Earth this year. The green comet named C/2022 E3 was discovered in 2022 by the Zwicky Transient Facility. It's an Oort Cloud object with an orbital period of 50,000 years. This means when the comet last flew past the Earth, Neanderthals were still walking the planet in the Stone Age.

The comet will make its closest approach to Earth on 1 February 2023.

The Oort Cloud is a predicted collection of icy objects farther away than everything else in the solar system. It fits with observations of comets in the planetary region of the solar system, but scientists have yet to observe any object in the Oort Cloud itself.

down here in the southern US, we had the big freeze sweep through, so even if it wasn't cloudy all week, we still wouldn't have been able to see it due to the sheer cold

I'm really impressed by how scientists can notice a comet or asteroid and use math to determine its orbital period. That's just amazing I think. Of course I missed it, but I have a good idea of how it would look after watching a lot of science fiction.
