AT Backpacking & some bushcraft. A cold winter night under the stars-Harpers Ferry-Appalachian Trail

Quick gear up for a 1 day backpacking hike on the Appalachian Trail with my best friend. After our first backpacking AT trip a few months back we were itching to get back out there and test out the new gear we recently got over Christmas. We decided to head out towards the Shenandoah river, however, we ended up getting a late start so we only made 7 miles in before we set up camp. The weather was quite cold and was forecast to get down to the 20s. with wind gust up to 12mph. We picked a great spot on the east side of the trail just down a ridge to block the wind. We had clear skies so I decided to not put my tarp up and sleep under the stairs. My GF got me a REI Magma 15 down sleeping bag. I was super excited to finally have a down bag that was both very light and warm. I truly put that theory to the test. The zippier on my sleeping bag broke and I was exposed to the cold elements all night. Probably the worst night sleep I have ever had in my. Goes to show you don't need to purchase expensive gear to go backpacking.  There is nothing wrong with getting gear from Walmart. Walmart has some solid camping gear. So don't let the gurus scare you or talking you into buying all the new stuff. Just get what you can and go out there and have a great time.
