Yes, you can eat the sardines after that. Only the oil (often sunflower oil) is sucked up through the wick and burned.

I too would gladly sacrifice a perfectly good can of sardines to heat half a bottle of water slightly. Totally worth it.

Damn... I can't count times i had 4 nails, can of sardines, hammer, metal cup and matches and I didn't know how to properly heat up water, next time I will be prepared. Thank you, sir.
