I like to seperate my building, giving each building a purpose and making my base like a village of some sort.... unless I decided to dig my base in a mountain then I might plan to reduce the area I have to dig

I always try to have a plan for my base but theu always ends up growing like a tumor.

The biggest issue for me has always Been the bedrooms. They always seem to expand infinetly to give more space for better and/or specialized colonists to the point I have started throwing everyone into one giant barrack just to save said space.

Not a bad video, generally sounds advice, but IMO: Your first building with a roof should be your storeroom/stockpile, because while pawns can get annoyed by sleeping outside that can be fixed, wood, food and medicine that's rotting away uncovered is just a waste that you can't really fix. If you aren't doing any major heating/cooling yet there is no good reason to have everything in one huge building just to lose everything in a fire (not to mention pawns get debuffs if they are inside too long). Next, If you can build a table then you can build a bed, no reason to start building rooms for everything that may happen in the future before you even have proper beds for people to sleep in. Also any unwalled stockpile (even the dumping grounds) is just asking for some bandit to try a snatch and grab.

Something to note:

Barracks, dining hall, rec room and workshops can all be the same room.

Same goes for Hospital, research and kitchen.

Saves space and reduces walking speed with nearly no penalty.
