Welcome to another Don't Starve Together guide! This is the second part of my series for beginners on how to survive in your first Autumn, how to fight basic mobs, what to gather, and how to tech up as you map out the world. Today we will complete the mapping of the world and pick a location to base for our first Winter in Don't Starve Together. I hope you find the info useful!

The debris from the moon didn't just reach the forest. It's influence has penetrated down into the caves as well, not only mutating its already strange occupants, but opening areas that had been long forgotten. Forgotten Knowledge is the sixth major release of updates under the Return of Them theme and adds two new cave biomes: the Lunar Grotto and the Ancient Archives. It also adds several new mobs, three new crockpot recipes, and two crafting stations including another moon altar and a station for crafting natural turf.

Troubled Waters, the fifth Don't Starve Return of Them update, added new ocean mobs, foods, craftables, structures, and eight new crockpot recipes. It also added leafy meat as a crockpot ingredient and renewable volt goat herds.

She Sells Seashells went live in April 2020. An Island fragment of the moon has left a lonely creature stranded. Is it friendly? Time will tell. New features include messages in bottles, the moon fragment island, the Crabby Hermit, Crab King, new seasonal fish, the Wobster and Wobster Den the Winch Boat structure, sunken treasures, and singing shells.

Throughout 2019, Klei released a series of game updates available to all players, under the single thematic focus entitled “Return of Them."

"Hook, Line, & Inker" will be remembered as the big fishing update. We finally have the tools we need to go sailing and fish around literally anywhere in the ocean. This update added over a dozen new ocean mobs, three new crockpot recipes, and tons of new craftable items and structures. Most of these new additions are tailored toward the goal of dramatically expanding the fishing experience in DST.

Charlie’s machinations have come to a head as she turns her attention towards the skies - and the mysterious entity that awaits there. Our Survivors will be forced to contend with terrifying monstrosities beyond their comprehension, and yet, there may be a silver lining: their minds and horizons will be expanded under the sublime light of an ancient moon.

Here is an overview of what was added in the first update, "Turn of Tides:"

Added a new multiplayer-centric boat mechanic, where players can build and deck out a boat for multiple survivors to travel together on
Added a new Seafaring crafting menu
Added the Lunar Island
Added Enlightenment
Added 3 new Lunar Island biomes, along with new creatures, objects, and craftables

Turn of Tides focused primarily on building the fundamental tech and infrastructure for Return of Them. Since then a significant amount of content has added to both the islands and the sea.

Don't Starve Together is the standalone multiplayer expansion of the uncompromising wilderness survival game, Don't Starve. Now including Reign of Giants; adding new characters, seasons, creatures, biomes, and Giant new challenges to Don’t Starve Together. Cooperate with your friends in a private game, or take your chances with strangers online. Work with other players to survive the harsh environment, or strike out on your own. Do whatever it takes, but most importantly, Don't Starve.

A method I like to use when manoeuvring the swamp is to look at my sanity meter to detect tentacles. If a large downward arrow shows, move away as you will be hit. A small arrow or no arrow, there’s none nearby. Requires a lot less concentration + friendlier to those playing on low/no volume as I usually do

I hear allot of people tell newer players to explore your entire world and wait till later in the season to set up your base, I'm hardly and expert, but I prefer to set up a base early on so by the time winter comes I'm already fully established, I'll only wait till day five or six at max to start a base. Lets face it, don't starve is a brutal game and you will die constantly at the start, if you're newer than there's no point looking for the ultimate base location that will carry you to day 600 if there's a good chance you might not make it to day 30, I say pick any location that has a good amount of resources and settle down, if you need to you can find a better spot later

Thank you so much for this! I've been playing Don't Starve since 2018 but I only recently got the opportunity to play DST and it's extremely intimidating with all the newer stuff in it. This is very very helpful!

Not gonna lie. Nowadays, I find basing right on the coast next to a few Wobster Dens is clutch, if you luck out and get butter say hello to Lobster diner, otherwise paired with Ice Wobster is an amazing healing food. Later after hitting the lunar island you can add stone fruit and Kelp stalks to your coastal base and eventually add the new Fig trees too. Not to mention the constant spawning of ocean fish when hanging out around base

Jazzy, I'm yet to find anyone do a guide on helping people learn to make good mega bases, like what to prep prior to starting, in what order to do things etc, right down to how to make it look nicer.

I know you make some good bases so I'm hopeful you might consider this, as I'm sure by now there are many like me who can play this game without worry of death, and would enjoy making nicer bases

Pig King does accept monster jerky, so if you've been drying your meat there's no need to visit your bird before trading them in.

When I base I look for dragon fly, pig king, oasis desert, mosaic meteor. Somewhere central around those areas. I kinda like the area around the spawn wormhole and the 3 road connecting below it. Boat bridge to oasis and boom really central. I'd just scout the meteor field rang and decide.

Long three chapter comment, brace yourself!

I would love a base location guide. I am able to survive indefinetly (you're late, pal) and pick a decent spot for a base, but I am always unsure where to place the base. Placing it near immovable resources like swamp reeds or the pig king might seem good, but I dont need to visit those regularly. A guide which went through the thought process of where to base with a fresh world with an entirely revealed map for multiple worlds would be great!

I often hear experienced players say that they can be sure where certain biomes or resources like the mushroom biomes or the ruins are as if some biomes often spawned next to each other. I'd love to learn what those patterns are (especially with an explanation on a couple filled or half-filled maps.

I did some base layouting in a "creative world" and found a lot of the commands really unintuitive to use: For example c_maintainall() doesn't get recognized by the games command preview and countallprefabs("prefab name") doesn't actually return a value. A lot of the more complex commands (map revealing, season setting, etc.) on the wiki don't work either.
