Q: Why Do We Use 16:9?

I've been loving the 1-1 setting on my X-E2. I was a big Hassey user and I love square. I remember alway wishing they would make a 35mm camera (film or digital) that was square. No more turning the camera, no more vertical or horizontal.

Good video I like the idea of 16:9 landscape & square portrait for today's hdtvs.

To clarify, most dSLR cameras (canon, nikon) have 3:2 sensors. Olympus & panasonic are 4:3. For all 4 manufacturers the image is cropped to make 16:9: only the longest side of the sensor remains not cropped.

Love ya and agree with most everything here but I'm scratching my head on your comments about dSLR video The GX7 has a 4x3 sensor just like dSLRs. Micro 4/3rds is called that because of the 4x3 ratio. I can take 1080p video on my Canon dSLR and the cropping necessary is no different than what a mirrorless camera must do to get 16x9 output from its 4x3 sensor.

Didnt know that... Question, so you said filming on 16:9 will give you the native resolution lets say at 4k.. and that you would have to crop the video if you shot it at 4:3.. does this mean the 4:3 wouldnt be 4k?

This video do not answers the question. Why 16x9? Why not 16x16 or 2x1? or 17x9?

You know what, moving form 4:3 to 16:9 was such a dumb idea.
Millions of videos from past decades are unusable and unwatchable now.
You can't insert old video clip into your project anymore, because it will be looking like SHIT with this pillarbox thing.
