For Men Struggling With Being Vulnerable

Throughout history, vulnerability has never been associated with manliness. Actually, it's usually been the exact opposite. The strong, cold, confident, and bold image of manliness has really been one of constant lack of self-awareness, fear of emotional expression, an inability of acknowledging things aren't completely in control, and a complete refusal to admit to one's flaws.

Of course, that's not how it's usually framed, but mainly due to the image shown in movies and superhero stories that's the message we've got.

I think it's time to normalize the reality of being an everyday person and the greatness that comes from being vulnerable. Let's take off the masks, confront ourselves honestly, and create a more realistic expectation of what it means to be not just a man, but a human being.

In your experience, do you think vulnerability is encouraged, or discouraged in society? Hope everyones having a great week!

I applaud you Adrian for bringing this subject to light. I've never been able to confront this issue because there are too many variables. For some people, vulnerability is toxic. For others, it's the solution they've been looking for. Your circle of family and friends plays a key role on how you confront weakness and vulnerability. in the end, the solution must come from within.

Took the words out of my mouth, lol. I can be emotional, sensitive and I’ve been vulnerable with my closest (male) friends who understand and vice versa. I’ve seen my dad (burly plumber, mind you) cry and open up about his emotions a couple of times growing up and from that, I’ve learned it’s only human, not a sign of weakness and you can’t help how you feel. That’s probably why my parents have been married 40+ years haha. Unfortunately, society doesn’t expect men to be vulnerable. It can be seen as weak, feminine, gay, “beta”, you name it. We’re human, we feel things too, and we should be allowed to express it. Just don’t do it at work, lol.

I understand what you're saying but after the same time you have to realize that certain species are born with certain gifts and limitations.

Most w o m e n just can't handle it when their m a n shows any weakness and vulnerability. The two are nowhere near the same, but, like kindness, vulnerability is taken for weakness. So when m e n try to lean on w o m e n for emotional support, a lot of w o m e n don't know what to do because they're hardwired to only care for c h i l d r e n.

I believe this is why m a n created religion.

The k i d s have m o m m y to lean on.

M o m m y have the h u s b a n d to lean on.

So m e n created God so that h e can have someone to lean on.
