Dear Ernest,

Thank you once again for making a useful video about credit cards. Only a few people know AMEX has a risk management technique called "Financial Review". And in that few people only very small amount people know what triggers Financial Review. This video will definitely create awareness among people and they can avoid some of their spending patterns that will raise a red flag in the long run.

PS: I want to personally thank you for considering my request to share my AMEX FR experience to your subscribers in this video.

Good to know about the sending monies to others thing that AMEX frowns upon. Been an AMEX card holder for decades and never knew about this. Appreciate the info my friend!

Having two PayPal accounts is against PayPal’s terms of service, also, sending money to yourself can also be seen as abusing the point system. Him having two PayPal accounts were mentioned in the letter.

I just underwent Financial Review with Amex. The trigher was several large purchases and repetitive payment at the same time.
I have Amex Business and use it to buy material for my business and also to pay sub contractors.
It is very stressfull amd makes you anxiuos. But also on the other hand the process was done fairly and American was very deliberate and asked questions about my finances. I provided the documents within a week and then tbey immediately discussed the situation and we were able to resolved the issue. It was not pleasant I will be honest here, but all and all the process was done fairly and very transparent.
I came out out of it with more appreciation and respect for the Amex organization.

I am so glad you explained this. I didn’t know this wasn’t allowed. I have a friend having problems and have sent cash via PayPal with another card. Thankfully, it wasn’t on my Amex. Thank you both for the heads up.

Keep your credit limits on all your cards under $35k and preferably under $30K. Having a credit limit over $35K will trigger a review.

I recently was put under FR by Amex for my Skymiles Platinum card after requesting a credit limit raise from $32k to $36k. I did not think this was unreasonable, and I have never had a limit increase denied before over the 7 years I have had this account. I was told I needed to sign some documents giving Amex access to my previous 2 years of taxes, which I did. I was under no impression there would be an issue until only 2 days later my credit limit was decreased without warning or notice from $32k to $20k.
I am now awaiting the letter from Amex explaining the decrease, and I plan on appealing. I think what happened is that my income that I reported to Amex was about 40% higher than what is reported on my taxes, because a large portion of my income comes from tax exempt sources, and therefore not reported at all. There wasn't a mechanism for me to report that on the form that they had me sign, so I am assuming when the letter of explanation comes in I will be able to call Amex and work this issue out.
Anyway, I wanted to share a relevant experience.

If you put a sole proprietor on a business card, what does Amex look for on a financial review? I have the Blue Business Plus.

Do Chase, Capital One and Discover do financial reviews as often/extensively as Amex?

if self-employed your gross is a lot different than your taxable how does it work for them you can have losses on paper but still be making money so you can gross 60k and have 50k in deductions total annual income is before expenses is gross
so AGI does not tell whole story bank statements can be more accurate and if uber diver your millage is not a real expense especially if you drive a hybrid

Hi. Can someone answer. My card got stolen and used, and thank goodness it was caught by fraud detention, but now we are in a financial review.

Is this normal?

I also believe having over 4 Amex cards puts you in financial review risk

I've had American Express cards for years, and this is the first time I've ever heard of a financial review by them.

I have a business checking and high yield savings account with them so I hope that prevents me from having to ever go through that

I currently have an AMEX PRG card with no spending limit and never had any issues.I was thinking of applying for the SPG card. Will that increase my chance of a financial review?
