Thanks for this! I just got started with Guache watercolors HIMI so this helps me ! I am looking forward to working with them now.😀

You can peel acrylic gouache when it’s dried off flat surfaces, so using things like a ceramic palette with it is no issue! And welcome back! I was definitely surprised to see this video up!

A nice review of the two sets, side by side, the colors are awesome. I think ultimately you could combine the two and it would last at some extent, later on you would probably find things such as layers exfoliate, because acryla will be impermeable once it dries, while normal gouache will be permeable. Thank you for review, pretty hair lady 😊😊

This video was really helpful. Besides just starting to experiment with gouache and acrylic gouache, I am really new to painting in general. Lol! I learned a lot. Thank you so much! By the way, your paintings are lovely especially the waterfall.

I never liked gouache and avoided it like the plague, until I was convinced to try Holbein. I love it! So far I have preferred using it for monoprinting, I’ll have to branch out and try other things.

I just recently started experimenting with acrylic gouache. A tip I saw in a video (don't remember whose!) is to wet a paper towel and squeeze it out. Lay it in your tray, then lay a piece of baking parchment paper on top. This works really well as a homemade stay wet palette. I tried the same thing with palette paper instead, but i found that didn't work as well. I think James Gurney puts the paint directly on the damp paper towel, but I really liked how the parchment paper worked.

Anyway, those sets look stunning, and your color choices for you paintings - branching out from your usual colors, and I am SO HERE FOR IT! Absolutely gorgeous!

Thanks for being back and sharing your experience with us. I use gouache and did order some acrylic gouache last week. It’s still in the mail. So can’t tell what I would prefer.

I'm not sure I can decide between the two! I guess it depends on what I'm painting and what style I'm going for.

I’ve just ordered some acrylic goache so I’ll see how I like it compared to goache.🙂

Now you need to try an Irodori set. Autumn will soon be here :)

I have two of their Iridori sets and a standard set of twelve gouache.
To me, a lot of the pigments they use doesn't justify the price of the paint that I'll only use in sketchbooks.
The only acrylic gouache I have is Turner and I do like it. Sometimes, if I mess up something I'm working on, I'll paint over it with acrylic gouache (as a background), then paint over that with regular gouache. I really enjoy doing that. ❤

I missed this 😢. Oh, well! Can’t exactly get rid of work 😂.

Love the paintings and how you did your swatches! Would you recommend a couple of brush brands/ sizes to use with gouache? I’m wondering if my issue with painting with gouache is related to softness of the brushes I’m using - well besides skill lol. Thank you.

My preference is for regular gouache, but I think that's mainly because I'm not super comfortable with acrylics in general. I have a small set of Holbein gouache, though, and haven't had the easiest time using it, so maybe my preference is neither. 🤣🤷

When using acryla gouache, there may be a few useful ways to slow drying time:

Someone mentioned a great idea, and that was to place a damp paper towel on your palette, then a piece of parchment paper over it, then add you paint colors on top, which keeps the paint workable longer.

Another method to try is to use a mister, and lightly mist the canvas surface and palette occasionally.
I have a little one that spritzes a fine mist. (You don't want to use a regular spray bottle because the drops of water are too big!)

You should be able to use an acrylic retarding medium, but most likely only a tiny bit (experiment), because acryla gouache has less acrylic in it than regular acrylic paint.

There are slow drying acrylic mediums but remember that by adding it to your paint you are also diluting the paint's opacity.

I just learned about a palette wetting spray fluid painting medium from Liquitex that sounds interesting. (I have not tried it yet.)

It is designed to slow the drying-time of acrylic colors, so that you can keep your palette colors fresh longer and the paint from "skinning-over", and also improve color blending.
Plus it has an anti-microbial agent to prevent mold.
I looked it up and found it for sake at Jerry's Artarama, Blick Art Materials, and Amazon (more expensive here).
