Historians in Korea be like

Historians have quite a hard job. Cataloging history objectively can be hard. Especially when the King of Korea wants to chop your head off for it.

Things to learn with Korean historiographers:
- Record everything
- 100% neutrality
- Backup copies

"Please don't write that down"

"Well I wasn't going to but you've kinda talked me into it"

''A recorder wrote both Taejong's fall and his words not to record it'' I love how that guy was playing with fire.

Other country: Historical data is rare, so historians struggle to find it.
Korea: It is recorded that the king pooped at 7:36:24 PM on May 1, 1469.

When the king asked the chroniclers if he could have a peak on those Sacho, those chroniclers will politely refuse, and then *write down the fact that the king was turned down from reading the Sacho* on that same Sacho.

The record survived because the Sillok had four separate backups in four distant mountains all across Joseon. The closest call was during the Imjin War when all but one backup copy was destroyed. The moral of the story: always backup your data, my friends.

Update: TIL in the Seungjeongwon Ilgi, which is about *five times as massive as the Sillok, * there are SEVERAL records about *the length of a ringworm thrown up by the king.* I didn't want to know this, but now that I learned it against my wishes, I don't want others to not know about this because it is not fair.😂

태종실록 7권
King Taejong Annals Volume 7

태종 4년(1404) 2월 8일 4번째 기사
The 4th record of the February 8, 4th year of King Taejong reign(1404)

While (the king) was hunting roe deer on horseback with a bow and arrow, he fell because the horse bows, but was not injured. He looked left and right and said, “Don’t let the recorders know.”

One of the editor of Silok in King Taejong (Yes, the same guy who fell from the horseback) era, Insaeng Min, almost went to the stalker level. He followed king even when he’s going for private places, and when rejected to follow, he hid / disguised and followed him anyway. There is at least 4 entries in Silok where the king or Insaeng's college complain about his obsession. The king laid him off eventually (about 4 months he was hired). The king seemed to be so traumatized, that when discussing about to what extent will historians record things, he mentioned “that creepy guy who peeps and stalks”. YES, this story is also recorded on Silok, and YES the king saying “creepy guy” is also on Silok.

I love the fact that the very FACT that the King Said to "Don't write that down" when he fell off his horse MEANS that it was recorded and it was preserved.

We know that the King fell from the Horse, but we still don't know the opinion of the Horse in this question.

GigaChad Korean historiographers.

World history could benefit with such level of quality, principle, and discipline.

Their only job is to record history no matter what, doesn't matter if it's good or bad, it will be recorded.

Historical annals in general tend to be full of hilarious shit like this. You should look at Irish annals and the mayhem in those.

There was actually another sillok that was made by the Goryeo dynasty(the previous royal family), which was unfortunately completely lost during the Imjin war. Just imagine the amount of knowledge that was lost.
