History of Korea

This video presents a quick history of Korea, a peninsula in East Asia, today home to two countries, North Korea and South Korea.

Chapter:
00:00 Introduction
00:26 Early History
01:25 Three Kingdoms of Korea
02:24 Goryeo and Joseon Dynasty
03:47 Korean Empire and Japanese Occupation
04:45 Division and Korea War
05:29 Modern Korea

In 2333 BCE, Gojoseon, the first Korean kingdom, was established in northern Korea, while the Jin state occupied the southern part of Korea by the 3rd century BC.

In 108 BCE, the Han Dynasty invaded the kingdom and installed four commanderies in northern Korea. Three of the commanderies fell within a few decades, except the Lelang Commandery.

The Three Kingdoms of Korea comprises Goguryeo, Silla, and Baekje. In the early 6th century, Silla’s power extended across the Korean Peninsula.

By the 640s, Silla allied with the Tang dynasty of China to conquer Baekje and later Goguryeo, unifying the central and southern parts of the Korean Peninsula into Unified Silla. Meanwhile, the northern part was under the control of Balhae, founded by King Go.

In 918, Goryeo was founded as the successor of Goguryeo, gradually unifying most of the Korean peninsula.

Following the Mongol invasions of Korea from 1230 to 1270, Goryeo existed as a vassal state and compulsory ally of the Mongol-ruled Yuan dynasty in China.

After a coup, General Yi Seong-gye overthrew the Goryeo dynasty and, in 1392, established the Joseon dynasty.

From 1592 to 1598, Joseon suffered from the great destruction of the Japanese invasions.

In the 19th century, Joseon adopted a harsh isolationist policy, for which it became known as the “Hermit Kingdom.” However, Joseon was soon forced to open its borders, leading to an era of Japanese imperial rule.

In 1897, the Joseon dynasty proclaimed the Korean Empire (1897–1910). In 1910, Japan formally annexed Korean Empire which was then officially named Chōsen.

After the end of World War II with the unconditional surrender of Japan, in 1945, Korea was partitioned along the 38th parallel with the north under Soviet occupation and the south under US occupation.
The politics of the Cold War resulted in the 1948 establishment of two sovereign states, North Korea, officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and South Korea, officially the Republic of Korea.

In 1950, the Korean War broke out when Soviet-backed North Korea invaded South Korea and ended without a formalized peace treaty. The Korean Peninsula remained divided by the Korean Demilitarized Zone up to the present day.

In 2018, the Panmunjom Declaration was signed between the Supreme Leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-un, and the President of South Korea, Moon Jae-in, announcing that they would work to officially end the Korean long-lasting conflict.

Is there any chance that North Korea and South Korea will be reunified into a single Korean sovereign state?

Ok, I'm sorry, but the pronunciations in this video are way off.

I'm by no means an expert, but I have been living in South Korea for the last 7 and a half years and my husband is Korean and helped fix this a little. I hope you can make adjustments for anyone who is interested in learning the rich history of this country.

Gojoseon: (go-jo-sun)
NOT Dangu-- Dangun: (Dang-goon) (Pronounced with a broad 'a' -- not long a)
Joseon: (jo-sun)
Goguryeo (go-goo-ryo)
Baekje (Bek-je) Pronounced with a short 'e'
Wang Geon (wang gun) Pronounced with a short 'a'
Sejong (se-jong) Pronounced with a short 'e'
Hangul (han-gul) Pronounced with a broad 'a' like the 'a' in father
There was a King Gojong and an Emperor Gojong - specify his title, they're not the same person
Panmunjom (pan-moon-jom) Pronounced with a broad 'a' like the 'a' in father - - not 'pan' like a frying pan..

Korean language doesn't use a long 'a' when you see this symbol (ㅏ) it's for of a broad 'a'. Not a short or long 'a'. You can pronounce (ㅐ) as a long 'a', for example, 해운대 (ha-oon-day) long 'a'.

I appreciate the work you put into the video. It's easy to double check pronunciation of words from other languages and cultures in this information age. If you're doing a historical video on a country, please check pronunciation. When you know better, you can do better.

All the best.

This video clearly took a lot of work and effort (thank you!), I just wish that an ounce of this effort had gone to looking up the pronunciation of important historical terms/names.

And I say this as someone who isn't even Korean but still... bristled at your pronunciation.

I loved the quick and brief history. As people have said, there are some errors and many pronunciations are incorrect, but the one I didn't see people correcting is the Kingdom of Silla, pronounced "Shilla". Thank you for the video

Thank you for the informative and short-enough-for-teens video! I appreciate it. I just wanted to point out that there was a typo where you talked about King Sejong the Great in the 15th century --- the text said 5th Century.

First of all, I, as a Korean, am grateful for introducing Korean history to peoples of the world.

However, I would like to say some errors in the video.

1. The border of 1945 isn't the Military Demarcation Line(MDL), but the 38th parallel. It is the MDL what you showed now. The 38th parallel is equal to 38 degrees north latitude.

2. Korean historical academia denies Gija Joseon of Gojoseon's history. Because it is a claim based on Han Chinese nationalism and there is no historical evidence excepting for history books written about China's unilateral arguments. Therefore, the Korean academia concedes only Dangun Joseon and Wiman Joseon.

3. And I want to correct names and pronunciations of nations or persons
1) Dangu → Dangun Wanggeom (단군왕검) [Pronunciation: dan-goon wang-gum]
2) Wang-geon [Pronunciation: wang-gun]
3) Dongye [Pronunciation: dong-ye]
4) Goguryeo [Pronunciation: go-goo-ryo]
5) Baekje [Pronunciation: Bek-je]
6) Emperor King Gojong → King Gojong (1863~1897) or Emperor Gojong (1897~1907)

4. It would be nice to add these texts in your script.
1) Hanseong is 'Seoul', the capital of South Korea.
2) King Go, the founder of Balhae, is called "Dae Jo-yeong" which is his original name.

Once again, I am thankful for informing Korean history to the world. Good luck.

You said that Joseon was subordinate to the Qing Dynasty, but it was not.
Previously, the Qing Dynasty attacked Joseon twice, and in the end, the king of Joseon surrendered, but since then, Qing and Joseon have only formal relationship with the king and servants, and neither interfered nor cared about each other. Didn't.
Joseon still ignored the Qing Dynasty as a barbarian in the north, and the Qing Dynasty did not pay much attention to Joseon either.

I think you need to watch some KDrama to get those pronunciations 😂😅.

Thank you for the video. Very informative summary.

Pronunciation is off, but otherwise nice video. Just a small correction, it's "Dangun", not "Dangu" :)
