the reference to what is potentially a woolly rhinoes is interesting, looking it up there is evidence of them being around in europe as recently as 9600 years ago (although the most hard evidence is 14000 years ago) that is a long time for myths/legends to stick around which is interesting in itself if that is the cause. the alternate explanation is that younger remains have failed to presurve or be discovered.

I used to teach Tutorial Classes for the Republican Rome Course at Queen's University Belfast. My favourite Class was always the one about peoples beyond the boundaries of Empire. North Europeans - Celts and Germans.

Fascinating that Caesar, a military genius, takes so much time to study the culture of his enemies. Rome suffered its worst its worst defeat a few decades later at the hands of the Germanic tribes, losing three legions, and despite a long campaign of revenge campaigns, never conquered Germania east of the Rhenus (Rhine).

The outcast in Germania, however, backs out of a call to arms.

It’s rather curious, the differences of which refusals are loathed in both cultures.

Imagine living in those pre-roman germany... wild warrior tribes forbidden from enjoying the fruits of civilization, endless forests filled with prehistoric megafauna, to be a roman soldier entering those woods must have felt like something out of a fantasy story

As Caesar well knew, there had been an encounter between the Romans and Germans earlier, in about 100BC. The Kimbri and Teutoni had migrated from what is now Denmark. They terrorised the Gauls, and defeated several Roman armies in what is now Southern France.
For a while, they had the Roman Republic at their mercy. But they failed to realise it. Otherwise, no Roman Empire at all. Rome would have been overrun by Germans 600 years earlier than it was.

Jeez, what a lovely addendum to my daily thoughts about the Roman Empire. Love it.
I just see at 6.30 a statue of how I felt, as a 60 year old, this weekend, after helping my youngest daughter move.
Love this channel. Knew that I would have to edit, but will just say that present governments want to have no warriors in their lands, be they be ethnic English. Client warriors are cool though.

It took only 7 years for the Romans to defeat the Gauls. But it took over 200 years for them to defeat the Celt-Iberians

Aurochs were definitely real we have skeletons of them. They are thought to be the ancestor of all bovine. And unicorns are not far-fetched ether. They are, in fact, alive in well today in the rhinoceros.
