They actually fought all night against an immense soldier amount difference. Gondor soldiers are really elite

Faramir is a real one, you can feel that he's scared of the whole situation but he faced it like a man, that's courage. When he realised his men couldn't take the attack he knows when to retreat, he has good judgement making him a good leader.

Gandalf coming in to save the retreating cavalry is one of the coolest scenes in cinema to me.

These men are the unsung heroes of the War of the Ring. If they hadn't held the line for as long as they did, Minas Tirith would have fallen before the Rohirrim and the Oathbreakers arrived.

Love the first Gondorian soldier you see fighting at the river just punching that orc in the face.

Fun Fact the Ranger handing out spears is Tolkiens Grandson.

2:09 I absolutely love this shot. Feels like something straight out of a modern war, with a battalion of orcs absolutely getting gunned down, shortly before their air support arrives.

Faramir is such an under-the-radar beast

1:42 IMO on of the greatest battle scenes ... the extras do a great job of portraying fear and dread as they flee the orcs

2:00 that orc just lifted a grown man with fully plated armour like it’s nothing😭😤😤

1:55 Never forget that Tolkien more than likely experienced this exact horrific scenario in WW1 with he and his friends in a bloody mud filled trench fighting for their lives in hand to hand combat...

Really puts perspective on the young men in that scene. The true overlooked hero’s of this story...

Those Rangers could have been game changing on the walls during the main siege, especially Faramir.

At 2:18 the scene hit me hard since I watched all the extended films of LOTR.
Faramir was absolutely overwhelmed in this situation and I have a feeling his heart broke when he couldn’t protect the city that his brother fought for just before he left to Rivendell.

Did anyone else feel a sense of dread when the Nazgûl arrived when they first saw this?

Did anyone else get chills when Faramir yelled "FALL BACK TO MINAS TIRRAAATH!" when you first heard it in the movie?

The Gondorians got tired of fighting endless waves of orcs they lost faith and their courage that’s why we see them get killed

So I did some digging.
From Osgiliath to Minas Tirith there's between 10-20 miles(in the lore). That means that the people who's running on foot from Osgilath, have been fighting all night along, some in full armour which will be around some 35-40kg(some 77-88lbs), while being hunted by Nazgûls.
But on a different note here's some background lines from the forces of Gondor, at 1:08 you can hear "give them hell" and "attack!", 1:18 "Hold! Hold the line!", 1:25 "Watch the line, watch the line!" 1:25 "They're overrunning everywhere"*, 1:31 "They're everywhere", 1:33 "Hold them all here" 1:56 "fall back!", "they're overrunning!", "watch out!", 2:07 some again yells "watch out!" 2:09 "Faramir!" (Thanks to D3V THE DUDE for that corretion)2:37 "The Nazgûls are here!"* 2:39 "Seek cover!", 2:55 "Fall back!", 2:58 "Osgiliath is overrunned!"*, 3:00 "Retreat, retread!", 3:52 "Incoming!"

The lines with an asterisk are lines with a part I'm not 100% sure on and from 2:39 and forward there's a fair few lines that's inaudible me, which I apologizes for

The orc at 2:14 is like, “Hey guys sorry I’m late, what did I mi- <arrow to the chest> sh*t...”

This is one of the reasons why the defence of Minas Tirith was so hard on Gondor. All of the ‘true’ soldiers died in Osgiliath or during Faramir’s attempt to “reclaim” it. The remainder of men hadn’t seen much true combat or were conscripts.
