Emeritus should be the title of presidents (or Speakers [of the House] or Secretaries [of State]) who are no longer in that position. Rather than refer to ALL of the five living former presidents as “Mr president” etc.
It is confusing to the reader and gives undue esteem to one who is no longer serving.
