We know that Jesus dying for the sins of the world did not stop people from sinning. Ever since he died and rose from the dead, sin has always been in existence.
Jesus knew and was so much aware of this, so he told us plainly that in the last days, iniquity will abound (Matthew 24:12). We can see how sin is prevailing in this present world.
And because of sin that has been in existence and still existing, the judgement/wrath of God will come upon this world and its inhabitants.
No one can stop that event from happening. Jesus can't stop it from happening. So he gave us things to look out for as we approach the end of times in Matthew 24.
God has a time and a day he is going to surely judge the world, and it is impossible for sinners to escape the coming wrath.

We must understand that we are all sinners and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). We deserve the wrath of God because we are all sinners.
We are guilty of sin and if God is to judge the world, no flesh will be saved because we will see our sin and shame right in front of us.

How do we then as sinners escape the coming wrath that God has set to come upon the world?

That's why Christ came to die for our sins.
His death actually doesn't mean that we should continue in our sin because he has died for it on the Cross, so we are free to sin.
If we are free to continue in sin because Christ had died for us, then his death wasn't necessary. He should have allowed us to sin anyhow we want, and at end of the day, he takes us all to Heaven.

Hiis death on the Cross for our sins was actually to make a way of escape from the surely coming wrath of God for those who will believe, and will gladly accept his sacrifice.
His death is to reconcile us back to God. To reconcile means to restore or harmonize our friendship with God.
His death is to help us regain the favor and goodwill of God. Remember that because of sin we lost that friendship and favor. He the propitiation for our sins (Romans 3:25).
His death is to give us access to the Throne of Grace that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in times of need (Hebrews 4:16).
The death of Christ has really given us the chance to access God's grace and mercy.
If it wasn't for the death of Christ, we wouldn't have the opportunity to even ask for forgiveness for our sins.
His death was a sacrifice to get for us the grace and the mercy of God. This grace is a precious gift that he(Jesus) is offering for free to anyone who's willing to receive that gift (Ephesians 2:8).
Know that gift is something that the receiver chooses to willingly accept or reject.

In short, Christ's death isn't an opportunity to for us to enjoy free sin. Sin is poisonous and it comes at a cost. And whoever continue in sin is going to face the wrath of God that is yet to come.
Christ death on the Cross was to make a way of escape for us from the pending wrath.
His death is to regain to us favor, harmony or restoration.
His death was a sacrifice to give us the grace and mercy of God.

Christ Jesus sacrifice was needed for us to have the opportunity to be saved from the pending judgement of this world of sin.
And because of this sacrifice of Christ, those who believe and walk according to the grace that has been released from this sacrifice, will escape the wrath.
But those who don't believe and even those who say they believe but still love to continue in their sins and pleasures of the world will face judgement.

For God to remain Faithful and Just to His Principles and Promises. That is, to pour is wrath on sin and sinners, and at the same time save sinners. Then payment of sin will be needed. And that is what Jesus did so that those who believe and willing to accept the gift of grace will find mercy to escape the wrath.
