Is the difference between the 14" and 16" M1 Pro MacBook Pro REALLY just the size, or is Apple hiding something?

I have been leaving this comment for years but I guess I’m never early enough to get noticed: Can we please upvote this so the guys at Max Tech see that the term “binned” doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the “cut down” version of a chip? To “bin” simply means “to sort”. Even golden samples, best of the best, 0-defect chips are “binned” – they are simply binned into a group of “perfect chips.” All chips are “binned” and the term doesn’t imply lesser performance. Intel’s “KS” and “extreme edition” chips, for example, are in fact, highly binned chips because they are relatively rare due to them exhibiting performance characteristics beyond the targeted goal.

Edit: because I value providing solutions as opposed to just criticizing and pointing out problems, my suggestion for Max Tech is please use the term "cut-down chip" instead of "binned chip".

(as always, for everything, don’t take my word for it - please verify this info yourself)

14:19 brother, 48% vs 46% isn’t simply “2% more” when the former is a 100 Whr battery and the latter is a 72.4 Whr battery. That’s actually a substantial difference. Here’s what I mean: 46% of 72.4 Whr = 33.3 Whr but 48% of 100 Whr = 48 Whr. Thats 44% more.

Make a M1. Pro vs M4 Pro comparison for video editing.

I am just now watching this on the 14 inch M4 pro with the exact specs. It's great. I threw in some resolve projects (RAW and LUTs), big Photoshop files, an Unreal Engine 5 project (with everything set to Medium) and it managed fine. No stutter, minimal fan noise. It's not meant to replace my PC workstation but a way to be mobile and "productive"... as I am right now... watching YouTube... on a train... on a MacBook.

Really disappointed with the 16” result. I went with the larger model since my older eyes need the bigger display. If they had a binned 16” I would definitely save the money, but they don’t offer that.

Without an external screen at home, and if you use your laptop at work as many do, I prefer the 16 inch. I have a 16 inch M1 Pro and I'm glad I got the larger size. Now, with the M4 Pro, and a nano-textured display, the 16 inch is making me very tempted!

I'd only go with a 16” if I planned to use it for work. The size difference is massive for daily driving and is well worth the cost difference.

14 is for users who want a workstation & also portability
16 is for users who want a workstation & maximise the performance

I would love to see a video of the M4 Pro Unbinned in the 14" vs the 16". Basically keep everything else the same, just show us how much impact the different sizes truly has.

I have an M3 Pro 16” for work. I had an M1 Max 14” and now have a M4 Pro 14”. I thought I’d like the 16” more than I do, but honestly the portability of the 14” is totally worth it.

Which will give more performance m4 pro (12core CPU 16 core GPU)MacBook Pro OR Mac mini m4 pro (12core CPU 16 core GPU)
24gb 512 gb variant?

Can you do a review of real world performance of m4pro 24gb vs 48gb?! Feels like historically a lot of the pro and max reviews were of higher mem machines which in things like Lightroom have a big impact.

Also an m1max vs m4pro review would be nice. Trying to decide on m4pro vs max with 48gb coming from a 64gb m1max.

I‘ve had enough of video-editing benchmarks. Why doesn’t anyone try machine learning on these devices, so we can see how size of shared memory, and the GPU counts affect learning speed?

So what do you think in the 14inch should I get the 12-core or 14-core? What would be the battery life difference between them as in this video the 16inch has a larger battery so not sure what the battery difference is if it’s at 46% vs 48% what would it have been if it was in a 14inch?

It would have been interesting to include the 16" M4 Max to this and see if the price jump from the 14" Pro to the 16" Max is better justified than to the 16" Pro.

I’m curious what you guys do for backing up files in case of an internal or external drive failure. Many suggest not paying for internal storage and using external. That’s fine, but then are you backing up what’s stored on an external drive.. onto another external drive? Isn’t that super tedious? Do you plug both drives into the Mac at the same time and manually make 2 copies of everything? Or do most pay for cloud storage and use that as a backup to the external drive? Internal and external drives do fail.. so again, how are y’all backing up years worth of files?

What’s up with the dent on the 14 inch? Is it more prone to denting?

It would have been helpful of you let us hear the difference in fan noise on each machine, but thanks for the comparison. I'd love to know how the 24GB RAM in the M4 Pro compares to 32GB of older RAM in the M1 or M2 Pro.
