Tone of voice: what you REALLY mean 😡😑😊😂

We use our voice to express our emotions and feelings. It plays a huge role in our communication with other people.

We often put more meaning into the speaker's tone of voice (how they say things) than into the words they use. And sometimes it only takes a slight change in our voice for something to be taken as a joke, an insult, or a friendly comment.

If you want to become more expressive and engaging, and help people connect with you - exploring your tone of voice is the way!

In this video, I'll show you how the same sentence can be said in many different ways.

Go to my blog post to find a list of example sentences and practice using a different tone each time.

This was so helpful. People are telling me I "sound angry" all the time, yet I don't feel angry. I realize that 1) I'm from New Jersey where language is fast and harsh, and 2) my parents were both genuinely angry and that is what was modeled from an early age. However it's effecting my relationships negatively, so thanks for this. It was interesting that in certain examples, it was hard for me to detect the difference in tone. Hmmmm.

This presentation is absolutely brilliant. I always get a very cold shoulder from cashiers and waitresses and never understand why, nor what I've done to offend them. After watching this, I'm sure that I'm conveying formality, sternness, and indifference, without meaning to signal that intention.

I used to sound angry 😂 but it was just the way I always spoke, then I found out about tone and now my words reflect emotion with better perception ;)

This is great. I know it is directed towards learning English but it is also helpful for someone with autism that never learned how to tell emotions in voice tone.

I am autistic and sometimes can't help my tone and people constantly get mad at me and think I am being rude or something even I wasn't at all. I could just say the word "wow" and get accused of being rude or bitchy and starting a fight from saying wow a certain way and told to change the way I am and talk and that it causes problems and told to apologize for something I can't help.

i'm a professor of psychology and found this to be a VERY useful, thorough, and entertaining video. I will be showing this video in my hybrid class this week when I cover communications. You should be in Hollywood doing voiceovers!

1 year ago I had a cochlear implant. I needed a auditory training to "relearn" words. I have been using your videos as part of my auditory training because you speak so clear. Now understanding people and me speaking clearly has been such a big help and such improvement in my speaking 🤗

It brings the question to mind the question if you should feel like you have to add a higher (friendlier) pitch to the way you speak. On one hand it can help foster better communication but on the other end it is fake and simultaneously creates this idea that people should have to be fake to be nice.

Fantastic real-life examples of which vast impact tone of voice can have! Even "That's great" can make me feel discombobulated ;-)

Yes! Tone of voice is so important but very difficult to recognize in a second language.
