BlizzCon 2024 is Canceled... But Why?

Today Blizzard announced that BlizzCon 2024 has been canceled, and will not be happening this year. But why? Does this have to do with Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard, or are there other factors at play?

To be honest, It doesn´t bother me because OW is the only Blizzard game I play so I would only watch the panels which would have news about it.

I think the main reasons are:

1) Nothing big enough to timely show off

and

2) All the people who did Blizzcon's up until 2019 were let go over shut down, and the Blizzcon 2023 was done poorly by the replacements.

at first, the title shocked me. after watching through and thinking about it, it does make sense. i am really sad about this cancellation. blizzcon is such a major event for me personally, whether i'm there or with the virtual ticket. i was truly not expecting to see this lol

I do believe it's Microsoft policy. These live events are too expensive nowadays.

I went to last Blizzcon, the show was great in content but it was horribly organized and not a great experience in person. Impossible lines and no seating and staff had no idea what’s going on and the layout was terrible

i think arguably blizzcon deserves to exist once every 5 years

As much as I would’ve loved Blizzcon, I understand why they’d cancel it.

In 2023, they announced the next three WoW expansions, and the next 3ish Overwatch heros.

Also, Overwatch’s team is very small now. And the WoW team has a new workflow. Having ONE BIG event would throw a wrench in scheduling since some things would have to be moved around, rushed, or postponed because announcements need to be made at Blizzcon, and that’s a pressure they might be trying to steer away from.

I think if the WoW trilogy and the next few OW heros are successful, maybe they’ll have a Blizzcon like event to announce the future of WoW after TLT

I feel like with the acquisition there are too many ???'s on the next year of content and rather than show it all off at once and have not much to show, taking a break to figure out how the content would flow under the new umbrella is the best idea. Maybe Blizzcon is done, maybe it becomes part of another MS convention or maybe it comes back full force next year with even more to show than ever. Really hard to tell but I feel like they will bring it back in some way or form it's just there was too much of a shakeup in the organization to have time to put up a show of its scope.

I think it’s possible they will move over to a streaming showcase event of some kind moving forward. Similar to what they did when they announced and showed off OW2. A lot of other companies have moved to online showcases rather than attending E3 when that was still around

Here’s a question, now that BlizzCon 2024 is cancelled, do you think when it comes to Overwatch 2, will they still release more heroes after Space Ranger and the Tank after her? Or that’ll be it for OW2?
