I love how he stood his ground and refused to give the names. And helped engineer a plan to help them get back to where they need. This is the people's champ more companies need.

Lots of people seem confused as to what he's talking about. He was pen-testing for security. He was asking questions that they had been trained not to answer because they're relevant to security and could potentially allow a malicious actor to gain insight into their systems

This story is insanely common in the corporate world. Management is incompetent and the first "solution" is "fire 'em all", which somehow keeps these managers employed for unreasonably long periods when they are actually the problem.

also props to the dudes boss for having his back. Thats how a leader of a team is supposed to be.
"you got the names?"
"yea"
"going give em to him?"
"no"
"said hes not going give them to ya bud" lmao best part. I bet that manager was probably fuming mad lmao

I am a former GM, 4 years ago the downward spiral began when my supervisors started becoming remote guys that I never saw. Blizzard was a company that put players above everything, I used to get praised for taking long in tickets and figuring out things nobody else could, giving personalized answers with jokes and roleplay in them if I saw fit. But then the changes started happening and the last straw was when a I had to get scolded for an hour for taking 2h in a ticket that close to 10 other GMs couldn't solve before it got to me. I recovered a very, very old WoW account that wasn't migrated to the new databases; I told by the senior GMs (they had a name that I forgot) that I embraced the spirit of the company when I did things like this. After two hours of getting scolded, the guys at the Cork office once again came to me to congratulate me for my effort on the ticket, got surprised that I got scolded, said they'd talk to my supervisors and I got an apology... only for a very similar situation to happen less than a month later and the pattern kept repeating itself until I walked.

I am friends with an ex-GM from the good old times (2005-2010). Back then they were TOLD to have fun and be friendly and chat and mess around with people, do fun things and make the game happier. Those were the good times.

I instantly got pissed off whenever that Director's immediate action was to fire those people. I really hate a person in position who has a mindset like that, easy to blame and fire your people whenever your management skills are the problem. Hats off this dude who did the right thing.

A smart person with integrity. Well done.

That dude owns his own indie studio and is an awesome person. He's also hacked the YouTube algorithm and blown up in a few months. Absolute legend.

The bigger lesson from that guy is standing up for what is right even at risk to yourself. "I'll just fire you instead!" is the implicit threat. But not fearing for yourself is step 1 to a strong society.

We've reached the point where hourly employees have to tell executives how to run their company

I remember a conversation with a GM talking about ice cream, fitness, and music for about 30 minutes after they helped me with a legitimate in-game issue. However, this was just after TBC was released. There were also a few instances of them invisibly watching our raid group, and making themselves visible and talking to us after we finished the boss we were on. RIP original WoW GMs, they were fun and interacted with the players in-game. Not like the AI chat bot they use now.

I think we ALL sort of knew Blizzard was mismanaged, much like the 9-5s we all work at, but its nice to have it CONFIRMED. I don't like thinking the artists or employees are the ones letting us all down, but the higher ups not taking the time to do fuck all, or know a damn thing (like at most jobs).

I love that
“I’m gonna go to your boss”
Boss: you gonna give him the names?
You: no
Boss:looks like he isn’t giving you the names bud.

I've been watching a bunch of Pirate Software's shorts and this one, for me, definitely hits the hardest. I work in customer service for an internet company (won't name which because 'DON'T TALK ABOUT YOUR JOB ONLINE') and that is 100% the mentality of directors of customer operations. There can be a flaw in a process and they will sit there and justify it to themselves and their bosses and fire everyone that chafes underneath a poorly designed process.

Then they hire new people, train them the exact same way, and fire them too. No care for the attrition they're suffering, and more importantly: no care for the lives of employees they're ruining. Poor efforts at fixing the symptom and not the cause of a problem.
