Idalia has strengthened to a life-threatening hurricane as it barrels toward Florida’s Gulf Coast. The storm is expected to produce winds up to 115 miles per hour with the chance of generating a 12-foot storm surge. This is a very misleading title. The storm is forecast to reach major hurricane status, but has not yet done so. As of 8 AM EDT/7 AM CDT, Idalia is a Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 80mph.
