Lately, we've seen OEMs taking it upon themselves to redesign the Notification and Quick Setting panels.

For example, when Xiaomi launched HyperOS they made it so that the Notifications shade was accessible by swiping down from the left side of the Status Bar. . .while the Quick Settings panel is expanded by swiping down from the right side of the status bar.
This in and of itself takes some getting used to but the company claims it is the preferred method of their users right now.
Samsung has even been working on giving their panels a unique look when compared to the stock design.
But now a new report from Android Authority claims Google is working on a completely different design for the update to Android 16.
If true, you will only be able to reveal your Quick Settings tiles by swiping down from the screen with two fingers at the same time.
This has been a gesture shortcut on Android for years.
We've been able to swipe down with one finger to reveal the Notifications or swipe down with two fingers to reveal the Quick Settings
Instead of having to swipe down twice with only one finger.
But if this new design is indeed moving forward, Google may end up leaving many people to guess why they can no longer swipe down from the top of the screen twice to reveal the Quick Settings panel.
Mishaal was able to activate a new feature within the latest Android 15 QPR Beta update.
And when he did, we can see there's a redesigned Notification shade and Quick Settings panel.
Instead of covering the entire screen with the Notification Shade, it looks like they're wanting to keep the foreground application in view while giving you a glimpse at the notifications
And we can only find our Quick Settings tiles by swiping down from the top of the screen with two fingers at the same time.
Here, you can see the panel taking up about a quarter of the display, when there aren't any notifications.
But it then expands to about a third when there's a notification present
It's only when you go to edit the tile placement, that you see the panel taking up the entire screen.
If this ends up being true, and Google does push this redesign with the launch of Android 16, then it looks as if there's going to be a focus on not covering up application in the foreground.
Which seems interesting, to say the least.
I've always liked that the notification shade actually acted like a shade
Some OEMs have made it so that you can see through the unused parts
With a sort of glass screen effect
But i find it curious that Google thinks people want to see their notifications and their foreground application at the same time.
It's almost as if Google is just wanting to change things for the sake of changing them.
I just don't see how this is better than the current system
You're removing functionality from a simple swipe gesture by no longer displaying the Quick Settings tiles
And you're making the user use two hands in order to perform the two-finger gesture just to reveal the Quick Settings tiles
So I can tell you that I'm not a fan but I'm curious to see what you all think.
Does this look better than how Android already handles the notification and quick settings panels?
