Correction. He had his memories in Adventurer 2. When his pod landed on earth, he was detained by gun and put away for 50 years. After the end of the game, he was saved by one of the eggmans robots to not only make androids of shadow but also nurse him back to health. In Sonic heroes, he's alive, and that's when he has amnesia. He doesn't get his memories back till his own game.
