In this episode, Duncan meets new homeowners who want to retrofit their homes with the latest in energy saving technology. By cutting their emissions, these families are also cutting their bills.
For an E rating (3 bed semi ) to go to an A rating saves an average of €2,000-2250 a year!!
For an F rated (3 bed semi) to go to an A rating saves an average of €2250- 3,000 every year!!

Fantastic program. I couldn’t look away, incredible work to get lowered HERS rating. Brilliant for 40k owner investment.

It's not expensive at all if you do it yourself. And you get to learn something along the way. :)

If you do this yourself, please look at natural insulation materials!! They’re talking about trying to create a healthy sustainable building and then wrap it in manufactured plastic products! You can achieve all this with natural renewable materials.

Imagine all the houses in Ireland converted this way .... more healthy and greener homes... it may seems a huge cost upfront but you are going to spend it anyway in terms of higher energy bills

EWI fitted here (house in the south east of the Netherlands), combined with tripple glazed windows and flat roof insulation, still to do is insulation of the pitched roof and partially the ground floors.
Also HRMV and underfloor heating with heat pump still to do, for now I already save 60% on my energy bills, heating is with air to air at the moment which is already proven sufficient to -5°C.
The house was rated G, but in practice energy consumption per m² was more like E/F (gas consumption 35000-40000kWh/yr for 210m²) . Energy consumption now akin A and after fitting solar it will rate A++ or even A+++. But I get it certified once everything is done

Deep retrofitting is well funded by grants in Ireland, here in the Netherlands it's 30% of the cost at max, a fixed rate per m² of insulation is granted and for heat pumps, solar boilers etc which are listed.
But you always have to apply for two measures to get the max of 30%, otherwise they will only grant 15%.
And it has to be installed by a certified company, no grants on DIY, this is to guarantee that installation is done correctly, although in practice I would have done a better job in some aspects and often it will also be cheaper even without the grant. EWI and heat pump are/will be done by a contractor however.

Somewhere I read that UK homes need to be 80% more efficient to meet climate change targets. 82% of UK homes were built before 1980, 21% before 1914 (English Housing Survey) this is a big challenge to upgrade all these homes and how to fund it given the different tenures.

How much thought has gone towards the volume and type of materials used in relation to the environment in order to achieve the energy performance of this property? none it seems...

Just wish we had such a scheme in Scotland !

great show and very informative ! one of the questions I have is Maintenance Costs and life span of the mechanical systems solar panels heat pump, s and ventilation systems ! Regards Pat.

@ 17:00 min. Saying what a panel generates when first installed is inaccurate. They degrade very quickly in the first 1000 hours. Called light induced degredation, it is part of this type of panels tech and cannot be avoided with current methods of manufacture.
The rated power should be from after the "initial degredation" period.

Interesting, still dont think pays back financially as a heat air sorce heat pump will still cost more than a gas boiler. Am no expert but would have thought the vent ducting would stay with in the envelope to reduce heat loss and gains?

These sorts of grants are badly needed here in Alaska; our pollution is off the charts, and so much of it comes from housing.
