Make Chlorine Gas (fixed)

We show how to make chlorine gas.

Warning: Chlorine gas is toxic and this should only be performed by an experienced chemist in a fume hood.

The simplest way to make chlorine gas is to mix bleach with hydrochloric acid. While this does work it doesn't produce as much chlorine gas as the other methods. It's also less reliable since chlorine bleach usually decays on the shelf to lower concentrations. It's recommended to go with the other methods.

At this point we should note that mixing ammonia and chlorine bleach does NOT make chlorine, it actually makes chloramines. Chloramines themselves are highly toxic at these concentrations and will further react to form other toxic products like dichloramine, nitrogen trichloride and hydrazine. So it's still bad to mix ammonia and bleach, but understand it's not making chlorine gas.

The classic method is to mix Manganese dioxide with four mole equivalents of hydrochloric acid.

The more modern method is to mix pool chlorinator with the appropriate amount of hydrochloric acid. Pool chlorinator usually consists of calcium hypochlorite, trichloroisocyanuric acid, or sodium dichloroisocyanuric acid. Four mole equivalents are needed for the calcium hypochlorite, and three mole equivalents are needed for the isocyanuric acid derivatives.

Be sure to use appropriate gas collection equipment to collect the chlorine gas.

Sometimes hydrochloric acid isn't available and this can be substituted with an equimolar mixture of sodium chloride salt and sodium bisulfate. Sodium bisulfate should also be available as a pH lowering chemical sold alongside the pool chlorinator if hydrochloric acid isn't also sold.

Remember you still need to use the correct stoichiometry of hydrochloric acid to pool chlorinator.

To test for chlorine gas a mixture of 0.1g of starch and 0.5g of potassium iodide in 20mL of water can be used. Filter strips dipped in the solution will turn blue or brown in the presence of chlorine.

Dear NSA,

I never took chemistry so I wanted to see how they react.

Dear NSA: I CAME HERE TO SEE WHAT WOULD HAPPEN BECAUSE I HEARD IT'S BAD
PURELY EDUCATIONAL
I WILL NOT REPLICATE

I'm re-releasing this video since i'll be needing gaseous chlorine in later videos. And I think youtube has become less anal-retentive about dangerous chemistry. Don't worry, this video will NOT be charged to patreon. It was already a part of the channel in 2010 and i took it off due to youtube being a dick around that time.

The title makes it sound like it was patched so you can't do it anymore

My Mum bought me a large towel as a gift once, after drying myself with it I noticed that it left tons of loose lint on my skin, in my hair and all over the bath. I thought it might be a bad idea to mix it with the rest of my clothes in the washing machine, instead I decided to wash it in my bathtub, sadly it was cheaply dyed and had left a dark stain around the inside of the tub. So I put on some rubber gloves and thought bleach might get it off, gave it a rub in with a sponge... Didn't work :/ Went into my sink cupboard and grabbed out a bottle of toilet bowl cleaner to see if that'd do the trick. Felt the sponge immediately heat up in my hand and thought "F**k! It's a chemical reaction", ended up inhaling some chlorine gas, not a very pleasant experience I must say xD I read the back label of the the toilet bowl cleaner and it had hydrochloric acid in it.

Great gift Mum! :D

My dear FBI, NSA Agent.

I am not planning to gas anyone, Im just curious.

It creates hydrazine?

This reaction creates rocket fuel?!

Awesome.

I did the bleach part accidentally once. Except with high-grade NaOCl. It was fantastically stupid

As a kid, I was always getting into the household chemicals playing "chemical engineer." I didn't mix bleach and ammonia. Mixing bleach and hydrogen peroxide was a more vigorous and fascinating reaction to watch. I mixed all sorts of things. Then I started adding voltage and metals. I stunk up the house a few times. haha

Interesting stuff. It's kind of scary how easy it is to make considering how devastating it's effects were during WWI.

To the NSA, I saw a guy died in Buffalo Wild Wings died for mixing cleaning chemicals. For learning purposes only.
