Syria's “green gold” is said to be the oldest soap in the world, with some of its traditional manufacturing processes dating back thousands of years. The handmade soap gets its name from the city of Aleppo, located in Northwestern Syria, where it is manufactured in ancient underground tracts. It dates back to the 8th century A.D. The soap traditionally comes in hard blocks made from olive oil and lye, but the ingredient that sets it apart is bay laurel oil.
The exact origin of the Aleppo soap is lost in time, and even though there is hundreds of tales and legends about its creation, modern historians cannot confirm any one. The earliest written mentions of this soap come from the 8th century AD, and by the time of the crusades it became one of the most hotly traded commodities of the Syrian territories. Very quickly after that, European nations adopted Aleppo soap, and started producing their own variations.
Formula and manufacturing process for this highly prized soap did not change over time and is still today performed in its original form – olive oil, bay laurel oil and water are mixed with sodium hydroxide, heated and then left to cool. Once the soaps have dried sufficiently, they are put into a special subterranean chamber to be aged for six months to a year. While it is aging, the soap goes through several chemical changes during which the soap will change its color from green to its trademark brown.
Aleppo soap is entirely vegetable based and biodegradable with no addition of preservatives, dyes or perfumes. Laurel oil is known for its excellent anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and disinfectant properties. Due to its properties, Aleppo soap is indicated as natural remedy to combat eczema, psoriasis, acne and dermatitis. Emollient and gentle on the skin, it is also suitable for children, excellent as a face mask if left on for a few minutes or as a substitute for shaving foam.
DISCLAIMER: I am an artisanal soap maker who loves to make handcrafted soaps using the cold process method of soap making. I make these videos to share my own personal methods and techniques for how I make cold process soap. These videos are not intended as tutorials. Cold process soapmaking has many variables and involves working with sodium hydroxide (NaOH, also referred to as lye). Lye and raw soap can damage your eyes and burn your skin. When making soap, you should already know and practice lye safe handling procedures and always wear safety gear. Any opinions or statements made are just my own research, I'm not a health professional.
