We named the Volkswagen Atlas our Best of 2018 award-winning vehicle. As we’ve done in the past, we buy our Best Of winner and test it for an entire year. Now that our time is coming to a close with the Atlas, would we buy it again?

It’s a hit or miss like with every car. We had an issue with Toyota and Nissan. It depends. We love our Atlas so fare so good no issues.

Own a SE V6 AWD R-class. We love it. Only issue so far is gas gauge does not go all the way to full when it is full. Love the ride.

We have our 3.6 SE for 37k miles and two years now. No problems and we love the ride and space for our family, especially on long distance journeys. The gas mileage should be better but the ride is buttery smooth. We also appreciate the 6 year bumper to bumper. So I am not concerned what happens the next 4 years. The Atlas also feels very safe.

You don’t purchase SUVs for gas mileage you simply purchase them for size, cargo, and passenger space. Most SUVs this size will get 20 or under MPG. This is a fine automobile.

I wish some automakers would increase the size of their ⛽️ tanks

I have a 2018 Tiguan. I get 26mpg. That works for me. I had a 2010 Tiguan, gave to my friends kid as a gift. 140k miles and still runs strong. I might consider when they have atlas cross sport with only two row seats, since they got rid of Touareg. Or maybe Amarok if they ever come to America.

The reason why the 3.6L is harder on gas is that the VR6 engine is an older design, so it's normal for when it was designed. But, better than the 2L turbo GDI 4 cylinder. No worries about carbon clogging, intercooler icing and the extra strain that engine will take. The VR6 will last longer with fewer problems. As for MPG. I get about 22-23 at 65 mph. 20-21 at 70.

Why would I complain on the gas mileage when this SUV can comfortably carry 7 adults and still have decent cargo space! Any cars came out in the 1st year may have more recalls. I can live with that!

The gas mileage is the one reason I wouldn't buy this car. I love everything else about it but 18MPG is pitiful.

Too many complaints of issues with the Atlas.

Several recall and a bad sunshade? In the first year!? You know, there are similar cars that have ZERO problems.

The only thing I don’t like about my Atlas is the gas mileage. Took it on three road trips with grandchild and was very comfortable. Love the moon roof. That was one reason I bought VW instead of Toyota or Honda. Didn’t want a car everyone around here has. GM or Chevy. A lot of room to put husbands wheelchair in back. Plenty of leg room for tall people even in third row. Bought the Launch model so I got everything I wanted and didn’t spend arm and leg. Best warranty plan. Great service department Plan on keeping this car at least 6 to 10 years

I have the same color and model.
No problems whatsoever. Kids have plenty of room, they don't fight. My number one reason for buying this thing. A person, an actual person can sit in the third row and not die.
As for gas. I get 650-700 klicks in the summer and 520-570 in the winter on a tank. In 5 years when the kids can drive they own asses or take the bus it's gone
Compared to what else is on the market in this price range, it's the easy choice

We must be lucky. We average 23 mpg overall and easily get 26.9 avg highway

VW Atlas is a fine SUV as a lease, the long term reliability and durability is questionable. Financially, a lease for most people is not prudent. I would buy an Asian make for the long haul of ownership.

Wow, that (low) range is about the same as the longest-range EVs on the market.

Most of the negative comments are faceless fake

Did you use the stop-start function?

I get *far* better mileage than that. Last road trip - over 25 mpg on the interstate at 70 MPH. Around town - 22 to 24 mpg. I’ve had mine 2 1/2 years.

I test drove one. The arm rest is to low on both the door and the center console. Very uncomfortable. Plus, I have a Durango R/T AWD so being spoiled with all that Horsepower made this thing feel sluggish. Other than that, it excels at being a mommy mobile plenty of seating space.
