Yes, yes and My first home was build to suit and I had a LOUSY realtor. It was so stressful! I love my home but I wish I had been better prepared.

First house I ever owned I had built. Not a big deal. I was single then. 2nd house me and my wife had built. Again, no big deal. Used a realtor for the 2nd one but not the first. No issues either way.

I agree with Mr. Ramsey. We build out hour and it was stressful, took forever and cost more than they said it was. We built a house year later at the crash at a super deal but had to fix it up. At least with that one we could move right in and work on it as we went paying cash. There are pros and cons to doing both but there is a LOT to know if you are younger and never did this. I also agree about having a real estate agent if one doesn't have experience. Great points. :)

Very subjective advice here! I expected tips on cost, timeline, weather issues, permits, etc, to be the reason for or against building but seriously? Not everyone has a bad marriage experience regarding decision making.

I personally wouldn't want to deal with the hassle of building it all from scratch. Much easier to buy what is available then customize it the way you want afterward.

I agree with Dave build your second home. Sometimes you don’t know what you want in your first house. So wait until the second house so you know what you want.

My family has some land just outside the city that I'm thinking about building on in a few years. It's a lot more expensive than I expected to build custom.

Is the caller planning on having a house built on their own like by hiring a contractor or going to an established builder like KB Homes and having KB build it?

I will be ready to buy in about another three or four yrs and I'm interested in the new construction single family homes but I really don't want to deal with the headache of homeowners association rules and fees so I figured building my own would still give me my new house and eliminate that association headache. Any advice would be appreciated thanks

It all depends on what you mean buy "building a house". Is this completely custom, so you hire your own architect builder etc? Or is it a mass builder where you just pick your plans and make some modifications etc. In any event if this is their first house, I agree with Dave, and don't build. It's more expensive then resale in the same area (otherwise everyone would just buy new), and they don't yet know what they like. They should live for a few years in a home and determine exactly what they need for their day to day convenience.

Yeah, I'd rather buy an affordable house to grow up in for a few years then build a house in the area and land we want and retire in that house.

Another suggestion for those building a house: Call me for the electrical wiring if you're in SE Michigan. I'm a licensed master electrician, and can beat almost any contractor on price and quality because I do all work myself.

I guess it really depends on the area and the builder, some places it cost the same to build a new house as it is to buy a 30 year old house, Stupid right?

Yes buy a house first and get an idea of what you like and what you want. Goals learn what you like find a trusted builder who is going to be onsite and have someone looking into what these laborers will do. I am thinkng of building a house.

Getting married causes a divorce . The house would be just another symptom sort of speak .
