Should we buy a house...again? // StumbleWell Podcast

In 2018, we purchased our first home and long story short, we ended up homeless. We learned a lot from that experience, not only about homeownership but what we each individually want out of life. One of our Patreon producers asked if we would ever purchase a home again and let's just say, even though it's been over a year since we settled our lawsuit the wounds are still fresh.

that parallel that you drew between apple vs android and renting vs owning was superb.

Who said owning a house was a good idea? Do what really fits your life and style! Be happy and free. You can make a home anywhere there is love and care.

This was interesting to listen to—we just purchased our first home, and I'm 38. We had very similar conversations about the pros and cons to moving from apartment life to becoming home owners before making the decision. If we were to equate our mortgage payments to our current rent payment / month, it would take us 30 yrs to pay off the home...so nearing the 70y.o. mark. And while sure, we may be paying our mortgage for a good while, it's still essentially our space. That said, if the space you have now is serving you well, you don't feel trapped, live in a neighbourhood you enjoy, etc. then of course stick with it for as long as it serves you and makes you happy. Apartment living has been pretty good to us, and we're certainly going to miss the convenience of not having to shovel a driveway or mow a lawn...but we're also excited to build a little garden, comfortably have friends over (and even sleep over), not worry about neighbouring tenants being in our backyard when we want to enjoy it. There will always be trade-offs, and it took me until now to appreciate the benefits to having our own space (but also until now for us to be able to put a down payment). When I lived on my own, I was convinced I'd stick with apartment life until the end of my days, and I would have been happy with that too. I hear you, Hallease, on being adaptable, and can empathize with your rationale. To Mr. Hallease, when you said that you wanted to have a backyard though—that hit home. That's a part that I've been missing out on for many years, and while I sometimes sit on our wooden front step on the side of our building with a coffee, I don't always have privacy doing so, and then scurry back into the apartment...haha. Again, trade-offs. Thank you again for such great insights, and hope you two are keeping safe and healthy over there.

Yes - would love a convo on your thoughts on expat living, as I’m seriously pondering it for retirement a few years from now.

I totally understand what you mean about having kids if your partner wants to. I have always been “I don’t know “ about kids. The one thing I do know is that if I was securely in love/married with someone, I would have a kid for them.

Awesome video. When y’all were talking about the electric bill I got flashbacks of our townhome having a $250 bill cos the hvac was from the 80s 🥴. Anyways I used to be like why buy a house? For why? Lol. But here we are in a house but had to move from the NE to the south to get a house that we could comfortably afford. I enjoyed apartment living though.

window tint is a great idea - 10/10 would recommend. the 'fancy' stuff doesn't change the quality of the incoming light too much but cuts the heat way way down.

One of the reasons I watch your channel is because I'm interested in what living in Texas is like! As you say, soooo much of YouTube is focused on Los Angeles and New York (and London), it gets a little stale. (discussion around 26:23)

I love you guys together! Your energy is complimentary and flows nicely on camera. I could see you buying a RV or a home on wheels and having mini adventures (camping, traveling TX and abroad (when you can) and living with nature). Living on wheels would be a vlog all on it's own and would help decimate your student loan debt much sooner. If you rent or buy a stationary home again, consider taking in boarders and roommates once this virus dies down or a multiunit. I have a few multiunits and my tenants pay the rent and all property expenses plus me. Also, it's an excellent tax write off. #stumblewell

Great conversation! I owned a house for 14 years everything was renovated but I hated my neighbors and started to hate the neighborhood!!! To say the least I sold it!!! No regrets!!!

I have never lived in Texas, so I am not familiar with home sales there. However, I think buying a house is a great idea, if you can purchase one in an area where homes generally increase in value (or an upcoming area..that will most likely increase in value in a few years). I have owned both a townhouse and an unattached house. I will say, the townhouse required less maintenance (mainly due to having a small yard). However, each of these homes sold quickly and I was happy with the profit. In most states you are considered a first time homeowner if you have not owned a home in at least 3 years, In that case, you may be eligible for a first time homeowner program, many of which require smaller down payments and sometimes no PMI. If you are required to pay PMI, most loans (except FHA) will allow you to discontinue PMI once you have paid off 20 percent. When I was a renter I walked away with my deposit, after paying all that rent. As a homeowner you are hopefully walking away with some of the money you've paid into the house and if you are lucky..profit as well. That profit can help to wipe out student loan debt:) Remember...as long as you live in a home for at least 2 years, you will not have to pay capital gains tax. I wish you the best in whatever you decide....great convo!

My mom bought a house after her brother died and we (kids) moved back home to get our lives together. Its great having your own, but so many issues. Fridge is about gone, garage door needs to be placed, and the erosion from rain in the back yard . We had squirrels, and now an infestation of bats. Also my brother fell through the attic floor so now we need to fix the ceiling. Needs paint job. So yes I get the amenities of an apartment. Its a lot and if we all weren't working to help I don't know how my newly retired mom would pay for it. Its expensive. Also some old trees need to go and that starts at $1600. I'm moving out in the fall. I'll sacrifice a garage right now in this GA heat. I have a hooptie too. Travel abroad. I agree with you there.
