At some point in your aquarium journey you might find yourself in a situation like the above image. Slowly, a dark green slime-like algae pop's up and creeps around your tank. It's on rocks, driftwood, plants and even the substrate and glass. Allow enough time with no action and soon your entire tank will be covered. This assumed "algae" actually isn't an algae at all, rather a type of photosynthetic bacteria. This fact will prove to be very helpful once it comes to removal.

The fact you put this video out in the exact moment I started my personal battle with this bacteria makes me feel less alone and gives me an infusion of positive vibes. Thank you, keep it up 😊

You didn’t mention the smell! Oh the smell of this stuff. Been fighting BGA for months now. Two treatments of Eurytho and still have it. It also can be black as well as blue-green. Tried the ultra stuff as well. I do have high phosphorus in my water so there is some truth to that. I have been using Phosguard and that’s helped. Glad you did this subject. Great video.

Excellent video. I just had my first encounter with blue green algae in 12 years and I followed your advice and cleaned the aquarium decorations, plants, and gravel. Big water change, filter cleaned, and antibiotics. Five days later, clean aquarium and all the slime is gone! Thanks.

There are so many videos on youtube about getting rid of the slime algae but so few that mention the product you use here. Ultra Life Blue Green Slime Remover all the way. It changed my life!

If you are feeding fish food with spirulina that will start your cyanobacteria issue. One of the components Spirulina is cyanobacteria.

A 3 day blackout a 3 day pause with no lights on (only to heavily feed my fish, and another 3 day blackout did it for me. I changed water like 3 times that week. Towards the end of the “treatment” that stuff came out very easy. There is a super small colony still there, but it has not spread so I am letting it be for now. May not be the best way but I tried my best to make it work.

Nu-CLE-Us. I had a professor in college make us repeat it over and over. Haha Love the science content though!

Personally, I think it is completely impossible to remove this stuff completely no matter what you do. This stuff has been around literally almost forever- it’s one of the oldest organisms on Earth (dating back 3.5 billion years) and it is the oldest group of bacteria. It was the very first organism to ever produce oxygen (caused the Great Oxidation Event). It can survive in hot springs, deserts, and polar regions and the tiniest little microscopic traces of it can survive dormant for possibly thousands of years until conditions become favorable enough for it to ‘revive’ itself- there are a bunch of studies about it and we still don’t fully understand it. Even sharing tools like tweezers and gravel vacs between tanks can transfer it. So no in my opinion there is really no way to remove it from your tank and it’s not worth using meds or chemicals to try to. I will sometimes not see it for months then bam there it is again when I least expect it. It seems weirdly smart too, if I start to remove it from the glass then it stops growing there and starts growing on my anubias. If I remove it from the anubias then it will stop growing there and start growing in the duckweed. I can stop putting ferts in my tank and that will slow it down until it figures out how to live again without ferts and then boom there it is again. I’ve just tried to stay on top of removing it and tried to balance/change out how much and how often I use ferts to keep it on its toes. Imo it’s best to just learn to live with it 🤷🏼‍♀️

I’ve had good luck with UltraLife product! I wish I *knew* what was in it lol but it hasn’t seemed to hurt anything other than the Cyanobacteria

Antibiotics are much more restricted in several countries. The Ultralife product is available in Canada, though expensive. Nice to know that it is effective much of the time.
