Scientists in the UK say they have made a major breakthrough in their quest to develop practical nuclear fusion, an achievement hailed as a “milestone” on the path towards cheap and clean energy on earth.

This is amazing and could be a huge breakthrough if we continue to work on this but I guarantee that fossil fuel companies will fight against it.

Pretty unfortunate to see the lock of hope I'm the comments for this. Yes fusion is a PR nightmare because of the never approaching "ready in 30 years", but what if fusion takes 100 years to develop? So what? The problem is that we're selfish as a species and can't look beyond our own lifespan. Isn't 100 years justifiable if we can can produce limitless clean energy? If you tried to develop the advanced computers we have today, 70 years ago, they would always be "30 years away". It takes itterative steps to develop something this complex and unfortunaty fusion isn't useful along them.

China has already operated the fusion reactor for upto 1000 seconds which is much higher than 5 seconds. A continuous sustainable run of fusion is required for atleast 340 days per year to make it commercial. It will probably take two more decades

why not ensure the success of fusion reactor for a clean energy source and bring forth mutual benefits to all..?

Better be quick, with all the trouble with Russia threatening energy supplies we are in trouble. UK racing toward net zero, we seem to have forgot the back up plan just in case. Get rid of everything and hope weather based power systems work. One russian said they could turn of the gas and send Europe back to the 1800's, wish he could, we had coal then.
