In this first episode of Official Black Wall Street’s new Black-Owned Series, we follow host Michelle Blue to Jamaica, Queens where she visits Dawn Kelly at her NYC-based business, The Nourish Spot. Offering locals a place where they can enjoy a wide selection of healthy food and drink options, Dawn Kelly is hoping to change her community through her food and positively impact a few people along the way.

The story of The Nourish Spot begins in 2015 when Dawn Kelly was unexpectedly let go from her job. Unprepared and with no plans for retirement, her despondency left her in a funk. It was wise words from her daughter that led Kelly to working toward a plan. With a reminder that she is a fighter who doesn’t give up, Dawn Kelly began moving forward.

It was Styles P that eventually led to her “a-ha” moment. After a feature on CNN about the rapper’s new juice bar in Westchester, New York, Dawn Kelly decided: I CAN DO THAT. Concurrently, she was already on her own health journey, and everything clicked into place. Realizing that the changes in her diet worked for her, Kelly knew that her community could benefit from it as well. And The Nourish Spot was born.

Offering her community access to a wide array of healthy foods and nutrients is at the top of Dawn Kelly’s list. While locals keep coming back for the delicious flavors in her Strawberry Banana Slammer, customers can also take their pick from plant and spice shots like ginger, wheatgrass, turmeric, and more.

The COVID-19 pandemic changed how The Nourish Spot was able to interact with its customers, but Dawn Kelly pivoted to meet their needs. The Nourish Spot was a revolving door of customers, but with new regulations on indoor dining, a safer method of order taking and payment acceptance was required. The business was able to implement several contactless solutions via Clover’s point-of-sale system, including online ordering and curbside payment with Clover Flex. This enabled The Nourish Spot to continue serving their customers in the safest way possible.

The pandemic isn’t the only thing that attempted to stop Dawn Kelly along this journey. The beginning of The Nourish Spot was filled with lots of doubts from others, but the businesswoman was propelled by her determination and faith from concept to completion.
