Useful fact: Wasps are territorial. If you put a fake nest up, wasps will no longer make a nest in that area.

I don’t think Dr. Mike understood the “stabbing/BMI” meme. The “joke” is that when a patient is overweight, the doctor will blame their problems on their weight, and that losing weight would cure whatever ailment they have (weight bias in healthcare).

Audiologist here. Love the healthy hearing plug about protecting our ears! But, the tympanic membrane, while able to be damaged from extremely loud things (e.g. explosions in military zones), they aren't what you're worried about when listening to loud music. It's your hair cells within the hearing organ (the cochlea) and auditory nerve that we are most concerned about!
Dr. Mike, please keep making awesome content! Also, please feel free to reach out to talk more about hearing. It's such an under discussed subject but is so important for both physical and mental health.

8:35 my high school psych teacher got us to remember that the hippocampus is responsible for long term memory by saying "If you saw a hippo on campus, you'd probably remember it for a long time" and I still haven't forgotten that so it worked

Mike: "The hippocampus has nothing to do with college"

Me, struggling with med school: "Sure feels like it"

I know where the meme from 4:59 came from. She’s trying to say that some doctors will focus only on BMI and assume everything wrong with you is a result of being overweight. They will never consider other factors. Not saying I agree or disagree, just have heard the argument.

Also it never gets old that when Mike sees a meme that is obviously a dark joke about doing something potentially physically harmful to the human body he turns it into a little learning experience on why it's bad to do such a thing.

It's like showing a meme to your mom and getting a lecture instead of a laugh, but wholesome

Hey Dr. Mike. I just want to say thank you. I’ve been watching your videos for a while now and you’ve really piqued my interest in medicine. Becuase of you I will get cpr certified on the 9th :)! Thank you so much for educating not only me, but millions of people. I’m super grateful that you decided to teach all of us some of the basics of medicine and I will carry these lessons throughout my life. Thanks man.

One of the perks of watching Doctor Mike is learning facts and then proving your friends wrong when they say something medical

Speaking as a fat woman who is working on it, a lot of doctors do really blame everything on BMI to the point of not looking any further. Yes, we know it has an impact on a lot of health conditions. But it didn't cause my endometriosis and lowering my BMI won't cure it either. And same with some other medical conditions. It gets really frustrating.

9:22 "Why is there dynamite behind the EKG?"
Always makes me sad when I remember not everyone reads Bizarro comics.
Context for Mike and others: Dan Piraro likes to hide various objects in all his comics. An eyeball, A piece of pie, a Rabbit, an alien spaceship, the abbreviation "K2", a crown, a stick of dynamite, a shoe, an arrow, a fish tail, an upside down bird, Olive Oyl (from Popeye) or the abbreviation "O2", and a pipe.

I’m a lab tech and I got just as stoked and excited as you were as you were explaining B12 and intrinsic factor. I felt like a football coach watching their team get a touchdown

I hate that nightshift meme because THAT'S HOW I FEEL IN THE MORNING. Night shift is HEALTHY for certain people while morning shift is not.

slp here! this is so nuanced but i believe loud sounds typically damage the cilia / hair cells in the cochlea over time which is what causes hearing loss from noise exposure (and cannot be repaired). the eardrum is usually safe from long term exposure to loud sounds (but it can rupture - which is typically immediate hearing loss, or there’s damage to the middle ear bones). figured id drop that tidbit of information here:)
