Mechanical Design: Extrusion

The extrusion process is used to create parts that have constant 2D profiles (often these parts are long, but they can be cut short as needed depending on the application). Metal extruded parts are usually made from Aluminum, while plastic extruded parts are made from a wide variety of polymers. Designers may create their own extruded parts, but frequently will also simply purchase OTS (off the shelf….in other words commercially available) extrusions (such as 80/20 style extrusions) and modify them as/if needed.
