The Tool Journey continues and i'm seeing the theme unfold.

Lateralus is a thematic tryptic to me. The first part of the song is about the start of life where we engage with reality and our consciousness in a simple manner and start to glimpse the complexity. The second part of the song which starts at 5:07 is that stage when we let go of our preconceptions and start to learn to be present and accept the complexity as the beauty of our lived experience. And if we are lucky enough to make the explosive and cathartic realization that as human as we are, our consciousness or the Self is a glimpse of the divine (whatever that may be to you), we enter the third stage of the song at 7:45. From this point on, we are experiencing the most complex journey of life possible, spiraling out into the unknown but energized and present for it, engaged in it, and joyful for it. This is how I interpret both the lyrics and also the sonic soundscape and instrumentation.

As a fellow 12 stepper, I know exactly what you mean about the spiritual quest in sobriety, and how some people struggle with it. But I also know that without ANY spiritual guidance, it's almost impossible to stay sober.

For those who listen to TooL with an open mind, there's a lot to be gained by listening and applying to our own lives. We all are literally one consciousness that divides by choice. If we learn to let go of internal blocks that judge others based in things we are biased against, we see that all humans are related at a base level, and we can find common ground for empathy, compassion and love. The building blocks for healing and happiness.

There's a great "prog" band who've been likened to "The Australian equivalent of Tool". They have a particular song called "Problem Reaction Solution" and I'd love to see/hear your thoughts on the lyrics.
