Over the next few weeks, we're going to take a look at the capes, cowls, and spandex of Superman, the X-Men, Watchmen, and the comic book movies of Marvel Studios and DC Comics to learn more about how costumes are designed and why they are such an important element of the modern hero!

I feel I would've enjoyed a 40 minute rant about superhero costumes.

Another thing important is that the public within the story can see that the hero is a certain one, so they know who to thank or blame. They may not know the secret ID of the hero, but they know what hero that person is.

Hank pym has had like a thousand different costumes that represent his instability.

I like the idea of the X-Men having a uniform. This reinforces the ideas of equality and unity that the X-Men fight for by visually making them equals.

Yeah, keeping costumes consistent is really important. Can you imagine if Batman started doing something crazy like, say, wearing a different colored costume every day?`

I feel that Scott isn't quite SUITED to make this video.

When I cosplay as Superman and I step into those boots, I always feel invigorated to become the best that I can be. As my cape billows in the wind I feel that every part of my uniform instills Hope, Honor and integrity. Embodied within that hope is the fundamental belief, the potential of every person to be a force for good. That's what I fight for.

For me the most difficult part of making a great custom for a hero / villain is that custom must have a decent color palette so that they stand out from the rest and contrast with the personality of the character,
You have to pick the rights colors and design the costume around the character, his abilities, his personality and story.

There's a white speck on his suit, and it's bothering me more than it should.

I make a lot of my own characters, and I think I put in majority of my time on their costumes, because usually, I've already got their personalities figured out before I give them a design. It's so important HOW the character looks, cause like Scott said, the audience perceives them in a specific way. For example, Superman, with his brightly colored costume, it's almost blindingly obvious that he's a superhero, but Batman, with his dark and creepy costume and how he hides in the shadows all the time, would be seen as a villain, even though he's not (like stated in the Comicana series). It's important when designing an outfit to take into consideration what the audience will think. What side do I want the audience to think my character is on? How do I want the audience to interpret my character's personality just from the costume? Do I want to make a costume bright and colorful to hide the darkness of my character, and vice versa? It's really important, because while the character's personality is crucial for a character to be good, their costume or iconic outfit, is also crucial. Making a good, unforgetful character is very hard.

While I get that they wanted to redesign and change up Batgirl's personality, but while the redesign is okay. I HAAATE the way the portray her as this millennial hipster. She was much better character when she was Oracle.

the way Keaton had to move in the batsuit with such determination and purpose was so good. it also really differentiated batman from Bruce Wayne.

Am I the only one who thinks Superman's trunks can look cool when drawn certain ways? That picture of him near the end was fine!
