Why Isn't Taiwan a Part of China? Today, Taiwan is its own soverign independent entity/country/nation, you get the idea, despite China wanting Taiwan to badly want it to be a part of it and them sharing similar histories, lanugages, and people. In this video, I answer why Taiwan is not a part of China?

The Republic of China only had that five-striped flag (each stripe representing an ethnic group like red for Han, yellow for Manchus, blue for Mongols, white for Hui, and black for Tibetans) from 1912 to 1928. As a result of Chang Hsueh-liang's announcement on December 29 that year that all banners of the previous government would be replaced with the flag of the Nationalist government, the flag was replaced with the "Blue Sky, White Sun, and a Wholly Red Earth" flag that the Republic of China/Taiwan has used to this day.

Fun fact: Contrary to what many believe, the PRC's National People's Congress has more than one party. There are actually nine parties total. One of those is the Taiwan Democratic Self-Government League, which was formed in Hong Kong in November 1947 by members of the Taiwanese Communist Party who survived the February 28 incident. The party is for the Taiwanese living in the Mainland, and they have no political representation in the ROC government because of them supporting the PRC. There is also the Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang, which is the Left-wing faction of the original Kuomintang.

Whilst I was a student in the History Department at Central Michigan University, I had a professor for The History of China and then again for The History of the Far East who was best friends with Chiang Kai-shek's son. He accompanied Chiang's family to the island of Formosa, which is the name of the island that hosts the nation of Taiwan, in 1949 when the KMT retreated there during the late days of the Chinese Civil War. These two history classes were my favorites in my history major. I learned a boat load of history from this man.
