As a Cuban born and raised I will explain you what the flag means to us Cubans

In Spanish it’s called
“La Bandera de la Estrella Solitaria”
The flag of the lone start.

The red equilateral triangle means the blood spilled by those who fought for freedom

The 3 blue lists represents the 3 different parts in which the island is geographically divided
“Occidente” western part
“Centro” central part
“Oriente” eastern part

The 2 white list represents purity and sovereignty

The lone start with 5 points represents freedom

And the reason why the Puerto Rico and Cuban flag has the same design is because both countries helped each other in the Spanish wars for independence.



I read an article in Wikipedia and there’s a whole lot of different meanings but this is what I can recall from school.

I’m not sure about the accuracy of this, but back when I was a kid, our History teacher here in the Philippines taught us that the Philippine flag was inspired by the Cuban flag too, considering that the Philippines was one of the few Spanish colonies left at the time with Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Guam.

Cuba and Puerto Rico were fighting against Spain for their independence, and both Cubans and Puerto Ricans rebels, as well as higher soldier leaders voted in favor of the Puerto Rican flag as a form of allied partners, according to the Puerto Rican history. The higher combat leader in command in Cuba, was Puerto Rican, who was latter voted in becoming Cuba's President, but he refused, saying that it should be a Cuban. Also, the person that started and began the Spanish educational school system in Cuba, and who held a Ph.D (Doctoral Degree) was also a Puerto Rican women. Both country's history and fights for independent are tied together, per Puerto Rico's history books.

I like both flags, it's kinda the same thing that happens to Chad and Romania, Ivory Coast and Ireland and Netherlands and Luxembourg

The independence flag of Catalonia, Spain is almost the same but with 9 stripes and in blue, red and yellow. It was inspired by the Cuban and P.R flags as they were fighting for independence from Spain as well at the time and to this day.

Just to correct you in puerto rico it wasnt really adopted until 1952 since it was illegal to use the flag during the first 50 years of american control on the island and in cuba they adopted theirs in 1902 as a presidential republic but they did have this Republic of Arms since 1869 in which they used the flag

No. As a cuban myself I know that 2 people (1 puerto rican, 1 cuban) Were really great friends. Their friendship inspired them to make mitch-match flags.

I always get confused with my flags bc I am Puerto Rican and Cuban and at my school we have days where we make a flag of our culture out of paper so every year I just switch my flags😂

Puerto Rico’s flag is light blue tone. The darker tone is no longer used.
