Katana Were Weaker Than Stones

“Samurai=Katana” is probably your image. In reality, however, the most used weapon on the battlefield was the bow (gun) at about 60%, followed by the naginata (spear) at 20%. Ok then the next must be katana right…? No, it was “throwing stones.” The usage of katana on the battlefield has not even reached 10%. A katana was used when all other weapons were gone, and the enemy was getting that close to you. A situation where defeat was almost inevitable.

Coming into the peaceful Edo period, the samurai always had katana on their waist. However, the use of katana was still so strictly regulated that the mere showing of the blade in public, (except in special cases) was an immediate death sentence. Samurai did have the right to cut commoners, but there were very strict conditions even for that to be approved.

Can't even cut down commoners without a license in this day and age

Makes sense. All throughout the ancient world, it seems being able to take out your enemy from a distance, whether via spear or bow & arrow, was the ideal way to win without dying.

It's like Europe where bows and spears and chucking stuff was dominating, but swords became knights thing and romanticised.

Most people forget that nearly all battles are fought at a distance. You want them off your land not fighting on it.

Swordsmith blinded their eyes looking into fire, burnt their hair under hot and harsh environment, swollen their hands for hitting metal. Spent uncountable hours polishing katana.

Samurai: alright stone will do.

I'm not one to defend the katana as a great weapon, but in parallel, a modern soldier's rifle is is his first weapon, then his pistol, then if the situation is close and desperate enough, his knife. In this context the katana makes a lot of sense considering the quality of metal they had to work with at the time.

Do hope the katana-is-the-greatest-ever fans do see more of your videos.

Fun fact.
Other cultures liked to throw stones on their opponents as well.
In medieval europe, standing on top of your wall and tossing rocks at the enemy incase of a siege was a common tactic.

And i thought people could slice mountains with a single katana swing.

My understanding is that the katana was pretty much a “oh crap he’s gonna get me if I don’t do some thing.” Kind of weapon.

So it was basically their arming sword, or side sword. As Shogo said, when all other weapons were gone.
