Me and my friend use to constantly see needle fish in Miami, they use to swim around us, never knew how dangerous they were till I read they apparently kill 12 people a year jumping out of the water and plugging people in the throat

Poor woman, she was just crazy unlucky, but, a painful lesson that you shouldn't be wearing jewelry during swimming in the first place, this case was just a very exceptional additional reason for why you shouldn't.

We hae needlefish season in northern germany every year and i have always just seen it as a cool rewarding and super yummy fish to catch.. Never could i have imagined people dying from this little guy

This same thing just happened recently with a surfer in the Mentawis in Indonesia, got speared through the chest by a needlefish, it was fatal as well. I've seen these fish all the time when I'm surfing...didn't realise this danger
