Chasing Coral taps into the collective will and wisdom of an ad man, a self-proclaimed coral nerd, top-notch camera designers, and renowned marine biologists as they invent the first time-lapse camera to record bleaching events as they happen. Unfortunately, the effort is anything but simple, and the team doggedly battles technical malfunctions and the force of nature in pursuit of their golden fleece: documenting the indisputable and tragic transformation below the waves. With its breathtaking photography, nail-biting suspense, and startling emotion, Chasing Coral is a dramatic revelation that won’t have audiences sitting idle for long.

US Rating: TV-PG. Parental guidance suggested.

i’m actually crying because i’ve never known how hard these passionate people have to work to take care of our planet, and it’s poignant to see that some people don’t care at all.

I really wasn't expecting this to be so emotional. Seeing the before and after of those corals dying, seeing the guy on the verge of tears after diving and seeing all the dead coral, it really puts into perspective what we're doing to our planet.

This is by far the best documentary Netflix has provided. It's a must watch for all humans.

I played this for my mother. She was quite overwhelmed with emotions as she asked me, "Can we put ice cubes there? A lot of ice cubes? Will they survive?" And I had to explain to her how much energy it will take for the sea, even for a tiny portion of it, to change in slight temperature. How big is the scale of the disaster we are facing right now. How everything is connected. It is a desperate plea that I had to shut down. It is the crushing reality of conservation. How hard it can be. How powerless we feel in the face of short-term profits and politics.

We fed lies to children about how easy conservation is. They understand a tree is good, but overlooked the biodiversity, how the soil is formed by the pioneer fungus and fern, how big trees can not exist without those soil conditioners. A forest and lives in it can not be made in ten years, and it takes a single night to be destroyed.

I hate to be cruel.

Netflix is really pulling out all the stops for us during the corona. Free movies, endless supplies of trailers, thank you!

As a professional scuba diver based in the Philippines, I have full assimilation of the vital importance of corals and is an advocate for action in protecting them. I'm absolutely glad that documentaries like these are out there so people who lack the understanding would somehow start processing it in and do their part because this is for humanity's sake.

I can’t believe Richard told Zack not to cry when presenting the time lapse. Half the audience was crying! I hope Zack was able to share and process his sadness with more empathetic people. It’s not shameful to show emotion. Emotions are often powerful generators of change. The imagery was very evocative. Beautiful work!

I am an undergraduate at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi studying to become a marine biologist. I turn 30 on the 28th of February. I grew up in schools where I did not find any inspiration. Poor self-esteem, drugs, loneliness, and no hopes for the future led me down a path which I was not proud of. When I was 27 I enrolled in a community college with the sole realization that the love you receive is proportional to the amount of love you give. I will graduate next year and I am determined to keep on going till I am able to really make a difference.

I took an environmental science class 2018 and my instructor, Poon, played this for us and I can’t express to you how I was in the front row trying to blink a lot to refrain any tears run down my face

Thank you Netflix for sharing this wonderful documentary with us! It was truly devastating the fact that we are losing one of the major eco-system in our world. This really inspired me and I am really happy that I watched this till the very end.

I found myself sobbing while watching this documentary. It broke my heart seeing the things that I love will evetually vanish. I love freediving so much and without this reefs, freediving for me has no point. The hard truth is that, most of us humans rely on the reefs and we seem not to care about it.

Big THANKS to those people who are part of this video. I hope it will reach more and more people everyday.

Thank you Netflix. Octogenarian here, so won't be seeing this for myself in this lifetime. I have snorkeled, but never could get beyond very simple places and even at that have seen a lot of
wonderful things. Saw the coral spawning once. Amazing.

it’s sad people don’t realize corals are animals. imagine if coral was “cute” in the same way puppies or kittens were. you know the whole world would be doing everything to save puppies or kittens with decaying flesh on them, dying in the millions upon millions.
