Two top scientific bodies recently announced that coral reefs around the world are experiencing a mass bleaching event for just the fourth time. It comes amid surging ocean temperatures over the past year, which has been the warmest on record. In this episode, we examine how a number of extreme climate change-fueled events – including coral bleaching – are on display in Australia and whether they could provide lessons in climate resiliency for the rest of the world.

Guest: Ivan Watson, CNN Senior International Correspondent

Australian here to fact check. We don't get tornados here, but the other stuff is worse than described.

Black Summer Bushfires burned over 17 million hectares.

Fresh water flooding from "rain bombs" in Lismore was just one location, they've been all up and down the eastern states, too many to keep track of. North West of my home city of Sydney experienced one in a hundred year floods, four times, in just three years along the Hawkesbury River.

Extreme flooding in the Kimberley region of Western Australia in 2023, followed by extreme heatwaves reaching 49.9C (121.8F) and overnight low above 30C (86F). Perth in the cooler southern latitudes broke its record for consecutive days above 40C (104F) seven days in a row, with three cycles of heatwaves spanning Western Australia for 17 days across 3 weeks of Jan/Feb 2025.

Big floods and huge bushfires are normal here. This is not normal.
The word "unprecedented" wore out in 2021.

The ocean heatwaves bleaching the coral reefs impact tourism, but worse thing is that corals are a keystone species in our oceans, with coral reef collapse meaning collapse of fisheries, which have both economic and food security issues. We are determined to make our children poorer than we are, through lack of political will to pay the cost now.

WE are the emitters the video speaks of. WE buy flammable fossil fuels vehicles. WE have two three four homes. WE build mcmansions that triple or more energy usage. WE vote for politicians who are wholly owned and operated by the flammable fossils corporations. WE cheer on every provoked forever war. OUR military is largest institutional emitter of greenhouse gases pollution in the world yet it does not report greenhouse gases pollution emitted. OUR actions have resulted in 51 billion tons of greenhouse gases pollution being spewed into our shared atmosphere annually. Civilization is in decline as we destroy the biosphere source of all life on earth.

To believe that humans could possibly do anything to lower the earths temperature is just a little crazy. 😂

Temperatures recorded from Satellites 🛰️ show us that big cities are 5 degrees warmer than outlying areas. Concrete, glass, heat from air conditioners and furnaces, make cities warmer. It’s irresponsible to compare temperatures recorded in the early 1900’s when the United States population was much lower, to today’s heavily populated concrete jungles.

If CNN actually looked at temperatures from the 1930’s and 40’s, they would’ve known that it was warmer than today. Forest fires were more prevalent back then as well.

The solution-allow Americans to naturally reduce their population by not taking in so many immigrants, so we have less concrete jungles that are 5 degrees warmer.
