The most important one is "Never volunteer for anything!"

Had a DS back when I was 17 (I was in for split training before I washed out sadly), my whole training platoon called this DS "DS Scarecrow" behind his back, he was rail thin and could be very loud and funny at times. My platoon and I were at the tear gas chamber and ordered to put on our gas masks, and when the event started we were ordered to take off our gas masks and we did, DS Scarecrow comes barrelling up to me and asking me 21 questions, all the while he's eyes start bulging as I spot on answer his questions, and he starts getting "angry" cause he wanted to get a reaction out of me or see my void myself from the tear gas, and he eventually roars at me to get my derriere out of his chamber, and I rushed out trying to hold my smile back from being seen from the DS's. I wonder what happened to him

Hmm, Military brat, father Air Force, me, the Navy, and my sadly deceased brother was in the highly Special Forces Section in the Marines. Every one of us was put in a war situation. I remember my first time of experiencing the intense pressure of the Commanding Staff that put us through extreme stress and anxiety tasks that we had to endure and overcome, but we worked like a team, and would push each other through situations that we thought we could never overcome or accomplish, but with the help of our team mates, we and specially me, learned the meaning of appreciation for those around me and us, and hadn’t it been for these great men and women, and honestly, our Commanding Staff, pushing us to the point where every bone and muscles were screaming in pain, the laughter and jokes made everything possible.
I am still in contact with the crew l worked with on our ship. Oh, behind those stone cold faces, they are big Teddy Bears with a huge heart, and if you had a problem, they would always find time to listen, then give you a wink, and say, don’t tell anyone, and l wouldn’t.
The best 18 years of my life 💙💙💙💙

One of the shortest recruits freaked out in the gas chamber the tallest DI blocked the door with a stance that said "I Live For This!". The short guy blew through the DI and knocked him down...Now you have a room full of recruits doing their very best not to laugh so they won't get thrashed in the gas chamber.

When I was in the Civil Air Patrol, during my last Encampment (Boot Camp for Cadets) as a cadet myself, I had a kid by the name of "Pigg" under my command. Keep in mind that this was back in the 90s when we were kinda/sorta allowed to act like military DIs. I resolved to not make fun of the kid's name but was unable to halfway through the week long training when my flight failed their fire drill by leaving Cadet Pigg behind in the barracks and not making sure that all of their fellow cadets had made it out. So when I was tearing into them, I couldn't help myself. I was yelling at them at their lack of teamwork and because of that Cadet Pigg was now smoked bacon, cooked ham, and fried hamhocks.

Cadet Pigg, if you ever read this, I am sorry for doing that! I just couldn't stop myself in the heat of the moment to save my life.

And this is why our recruitment rates are in the basement.

The other unwritten rule in the mess hall is if you’re the first person to sit down with your food, wait until everyone sits down then begin eating and eat very slowly. Some mess halls have a rule that once you finish, you must put your tray up. The first person who does this basically declares that lunch is over.

This is a problem because, if you’re the last one to sit down, the first person to sit down would have already finished. Meaning you won’t get to eat.

So to be blunt. Everyone starts at the same time. Everyone eats at the same pace. Everyone finishes at the same time.
