I see so many good questions yet only a few answers. Self-etch primer by its nature contains a weak acid to grab onto the metal to get a tooth to hold onto. Epoxy should be looked as a sealer. It seal moisture out and sticks to everything. If a fiberglass filler is used over a weld that has been ground, hammered or shrunk as needed, it fills in pinholes. The filler of your choice can then be applied as part of the build coat to get the surface real close. It is not waterproof. I the project is delayed, use epoxy over just the filler to cover and seal. 2K primer over repair only is dry sanded with guide coat. The high build would be the next layer to cover the repairs or entire vehicle if doing a restoration, but still needs a tooth to hold onto. Many will dry sand with 180, then move to 300-400 grit to spray the primer depending on the data sheet. Dry sanding the primer or high build to 400-600 prior to the base color would be the final and third time guide coat is used. I never look at epoxy as a primer, not sure why it’s even on the can.

ok, I have a 1964 jeep truck that is stripped to bare metal should I apply the epoxy primer first and then cover with the polyester primer or do I only need to apply polyester primer and then sand for a top coat?

Kevin,

Great Video. I'm restoring a 1930 Model A Ford Cabriolet where there are areas of the car that show bare metal, covered with red primer, Bondo, and the inside of the fenders have been painted with black Rustoleum paint.

My question is;

Which one of your primers or combination of primers do I use before I apply the basecoat?
Thank You,

John Bach

Hello. thanks for your informative videos. Do you have any videos about whether you should add pigment to the light grey undercoat/filler to make the top coat cover well? last summer i used so much metallic green paint on a light grey filler :( i was told it should have been prepared with a black undercoat/filler. i am looking into painting agricultural equipment in Red and was wondering if light grey undercoat/filler is ok for it? thanks ( it appeared as if it had white undercoat from factory) Regards
